Worth Noting: Chris-Craft appeared on the hit TV series, Miami Vice in 1980’s.

Chris-Craft’s heritage dates back to 1974 when Christopher Columbus Smith built his first boat at the age of 13. By 1881, Chris joined his brother, Hank, and they begin manufacturing hunting craft, which led to the building of “standardized” runabouts.

The Smith Ryan Boat Company was established in 1910 and focused on the mass production of fast, economical runabouts. The company was named Chris Smith & Sons Boat Company in 1922. Five years later, Chris-Craft was recognized as the world’s largest builder of mahogany powerboats.

During the 1940’s, Chris-Craft built 12,000 military vessels for the United States Navy and Army. By 1950, Chris-Craft offered 139 different recreational powerboat models.

Chris-Craft began building fiberglass boats in 1956 and ceased production of wooden boats in 1971. Following the exclusive production of fiberglass boats, Chris-Craft and George Dale Murray developed the 300 Chris-Cat, a racing catamaran.

For over 140 years, Chris-Craft has been an industry leader in the production of recreational boats that define American heritage, agile performance, and traditional craftsmanship.
