60' De Haas Shipyard | 1968 | $295,000

Seattle, WA

Mitchif Boat | 60' De Haas Shipyard 1968

“Mitchif” is a very stout, beautifully finished and finely equipped, ketch-rigged motorsailer conversion. She is ruggedly built of Cor-Ten steel by the De Haas shipyard for the harsh offshore conditions of the North Sea. The mid-Nineties conversion was designed by leading naval architects of the Netherlands, and reported to have taken more than two years to complete at a cost approaching a million €.

She is gorgeous inside and out with the finest of interior teak finishes. Clever and purposeful design elements abound. "Mitchif" is fully equipped with extensive electronics, rigged and ready for that life-changing adventure you’ve been planning for so long.

With her enormous fuel capacity and a range of more than 2,500 miles while under power, you'll certainly be able to 'get there' -- whether that is Victoria, the West Coast of the U.S. ... or Bora Bora --  she’ll be ready when you are!

Layout And Description

Enter from either port or starboard on the fully enclosed aft deck with its zippered vinyl enclosure. This spacious aft deck measures 12’ by 14’ width. The teak dining table here has been newly refinished. There is a large 220v deck freezer, stowage for lines or small gear and deck access hatches to the lazarette and sea chest rudder post. Mizzen halyards, outhaul and staysail halyards are led to the base of the mizzen mast, and there’s an emergency exit hatch for the master stateroom with small portlights. We recently repainted the aft boat deck interior and exterior, bulwarks, handrails and cap rails. Aft deck also has mooring bollards and cleats, a transom gate, flag mount and fishing rod holders.

Enter the interior of “Mitchif” from the aft deck into the Pilot House with her new leather settee, matching helm chair and a refinished sole. There are two skylights and slider window frames for good ventilation. Sophisticated electronics and all systems are arrayed beautifully at the helm console. Descend the starboard companionway at the nav table to the full width aft master stateroom. The custom bed frame has a pneumatic lift system for storage beneath. All is beautifully finished in teak paneling. There is a built-in desk with ‘repeater’ electronics, storage and hanging lockers, along with a small strong box for security.

Leaving the helm, move forward along the port side main companionway to the tiled starboard head with radiator heating, toilet, sink and shower. Continue forward to the galley and salon. Recently refurbished leather settee seating and a refinished sole for a bright, clean setting. Sliding steel framed windows have separate aluminum storm covers stowed aboard. All 220v galley appliances and refrigeration and there is ample storage for utensils, dishes and cookware.

The port companionway leads down and forward from the salon to the guest double stateroom. Custom bed frame and mattress raises for storage beneath. A second built-in refrigerator for galley overflow is here, along with a small sink, drawer storage and two hanging lockers.

Mid-ship along the main companionway is the deck entry to the engine room, through the fireproof hatch with sound deadening. Descend the aluminum companionway ladder to the engine room and machinery space. All is well laid out, clearly labeled with a color coordinated scheme allowing quick understanding of all systems and locations. Three steel fuel tanks with 500 gallon capacity each. Good access to the gearbox, shaft bearings and main shaft. The MarineTec Kubola diesel hot water boiler system in the engine room also provides radiant heat throughout the boat. There is a 16kw Onan genset to port, water maker, inverters, batteries, tool bench, lube oil tank and large inventory of spares. Extensive re-wiring has been completed in the engine room, including new panels, chargers and inverters. All of the schematic drawings and system plans from both the original construction as well as the conversion process are onboard.

Now exit from the port side companionway watertight door to the side deck and forward to the Fo’c’sle with a centerline ladder to the “crew’s quarters” or third stateroom. Two extra length twin vee berths, cabinet storage, sink and heater, all beautifully finished in teak with fine linens.

Fo’c’sle storage is for lines and spares as listed below. This space was emptied, thoroughly cleaned up and the interior deck was scraped, primed and repainted in September. Powerful dual-capstan electric windlass for the twin bow anchors.

Ship's History

Her first owners were the fishermen of the J. Jorna family who were residents near Den Oever in the northern Dutch costal municipality of Wieringen. They christened her as “Gea Catharina” and she carried the Dutch federal registry number WR 155. She served as a coastal fishing and transport vessel, originally powered by a GM 6-71.

She was sold in the mid-Eighties to a Mr. Nico Moog, a European industrialist who re-christened her as "Chica" with homeport of Hamburg. He undertook her lengthy planning and conversion to a motorsailer. This was designed by the Vripack International naval architects of Sneek in the Netherlands, with some of the work completed at the Kuipers Shipyard in the mid 1990's, along with installation of a new Iveco six cylinder diesel.

Her third owners proved her seaworthiness and functionality once after purchase in the Mediterranean. Their leisurely six-month sailing voyage from the Canary Islands home to the San Juan Islands and Seattle took place in 2006 - 07. The hull was sounded prior to purchase with average thickness of 6.3 mm, and 6.8 at the waterline. She was then hauled in La Paz, Mexico after the trans-Atlantic crossing in 2007 and the bottom was sandblasted with 2 coats of epoxy primer and two top coats applied.

Once in the states she received additional significant re-wiring and upgrades to the engine room electrical systems along with exterior and topsides painting. She has been moored in the cold, fresh water of Seattle, Washington for the past four years.

The Pacific Marine Foundation is now the proud owner of this remarkable 'round-the-world motorsailer. “Mitchif” is a USCG Documented vessel, homeport of Honolulu.
