Jeremy McGeary reviews this performance built cruiser for the CW 2009 Sailboat Show
Dufour yachts has for several years been building two lines of boats, a performance line and the Grand’ Large cruising models. With the entry last year of the 525 Grand’ Large, the cruising range appeared to merge into the performance zone. Dufour 40 Performance Plus should help to reinforce the distinction.
The Performance Plus package ensures consistency through monitored custom construction of the hull. It adds juice by reducing weight, supplying Dyneema running rigging, and by refining details, such as fitting flush through-hull fittings. Certain equipment that is standard in other editions, the windlass for example, is supplied but not installed. Instruments are left to the discretion of individual owners.
Dufour boats have had great success racing in Europe, and the Plus package provides a head start for sailors with an eye on the grand prix circuits. Of course, the standard Dufour interior finished with Moabi veneer and trim goes along for the ride.
