53 Azimut Review

Source: Dag Pike, MotorBoating Magazine

With its new 53, Italian builder Azimut produced a real winner, a class-leading design in a crowded sector of the market. Here is a flybridge model that builds on the company’s experience: It’s a yacht that not only looks good but also handles well and operates smoothly.

The profile is typical Azimut. The superstructure rises in flowing lines up to the flybridge, where the reverse-angle windshield adds a hint of aggression. A fixed Bimini extends forward from the arch mast. It is a bit unusual, but it’s also a practical feature on a boat this size.

It’s not surprising the 53 is equipped with all the features you would expect on a modern flybridge, including a sun bed around the offset helm, a dining table and settee, a wet bar and barbecue, plus a second sun bed aft. The helm station is elegant in its simplicity, with just the basics for control and navigation.

Likewise, the cockpit layout is well-planned, with a transom settee and a table. Beneath the settee is a compact crew cabin or a good lazarette. Tender stowage is on the hydraulic swim platform, which makes launching a simple job.

Inside, the decor is breathtaking. The seating fabric matches the aubergine coloring of the boat’s topside; it’s a level of integrated design I haven’t seen before. This is matched to limed oak paneling and furniture fitted with recessed leather striping in dark brown. Overall, the effect is quite stunning. It is also practical, with the low settees looking very inviting as they face the flat-screen TV on the starboard side. The dining area is two steps up from the lounge, with a stylish wooden table on the starboard side opposite the galley.

The 53 is a fine new addition to the Azimut flybridge series, which runs from 42 to 116 feet. The builder has come up with a design that will leave its competitors with some catching up to do.
