Beneteau Power & Sailboats

52 Beneteau Review

Source: Capt. Vincent Daniello, MotorBoating Magazine

Expedition yachts have been gaining in popularity, although not necessarily for their ability to cross oceans. They have over sized living spaces, wide passageways, big galleys and homelike ambiance, all intended to be uber-livable for days or weeks at sea. As a result, they make great cruisers, although their ultra-seakindly hulls can be too slow for the hectic schedules of some owners.

Enter Beneteau’s new Swift Trawler 52. It has all the spaciousness and comforts of an expedition yacht, plus plenty of speed for those busy owners who cruise on weekends.

The advantage of design inspired by commercial craft is apparent practical is preferable on the 52. There are near-waist-high bulwarks, a full overhead in the cockpit and wide side decks that feel more secure and inviting than the decks on some 80-footers. The salon could easily seat eight or 10 for dinner, and the big U-shaped settee and chairs will lounge at least six for Sunday football. The galley up is built to feed a crowd, either at the dock or under way, while still allowing the chef to socialize with guests in the salon.

In the pilothouse, visibility is outstanding from the helm or the settee, which is raised two steps above the sole for a nice view. A proper set of stairs, not a ladder, leads from the pilothouse up to the flying bridge. Below decks, the VIP stateroom and guest cabin with bunks, which share a head, are sized as they should be on a 50-footer. The master, however (full beam beneath the pilothouse), is huge, with a queen berth, stowage and a desk.

Gazing at the harbor through the large hull-side windows in the master suite, it is easy to see why boaters choose to live aboard, and also why one would choose this Swift Trawler 52.
