Boat Review: 65 Carver Marquis

65 Carver Marquis Review

The Marquis 65 may be built in America by Carver but its styling, lines and elegance all have a distinctly Italian edge to them, courtesy of Nuvolari & Lenard. Carlo Calaprice, who is the Marquis sales manager at the Italian importer Metauro Mare, brims with enthusiasm about the 20-metre planing motoryacht. And with good reason: “Carver was voted the best yard in the 40’ to 60’ segment. The same technologies used for the U.S. Navy’s vessels are used for its builds. The boats are perfect from a technical, plant and wiring point of view. They’re beautifully finished and accessorised too but they also reflect the American preoccupation with liveability rather than navigation. In other words, more emphasis is placed on interior comfort than exterior lines and performance.” But the Marquis line brings something extra to the mix. Calaprice continues: “This new line is aimed at the international market but it’s also been a hit with the Americans because it combines all of the aforementioned advantages with the kind of inimitable Italian styling that no one can resist.” The Marquis 65’ deserves a closer look and you, the readers, will get just that at the next Genoa Show. In the meantime, let’s give you a quick virtual tour. Starting aft, we have a wide teak platform that lowers to water level, making tender and wet bike launches a breeze (there’s another tender with crane aft on the fly too, by the way). The covered cockpit is home to a sofa, table and other chairs and leads into a saloon. Here, as with the rest of the yacht, cherry is the wood of choice. To port there’s a group of leather sofas and armchairs arranged around a low table. There’s also a plasma TV flanked by two chairs. To starboard after the fly stairs, we having the dining area and a galley (very well accessorised as is the American way) behind the bar. The bow area is entirely taken up by the bridge which can be kitted out to suit the owner. It also includes a roomy semicircular sofa for guests. The big, very practically laid out engine room is dominated by two engines but the choice of brand (Volvo Penta, Caterpillar or Mtu) and size (1,730 to 3,000 hp) is left entirely to the client. The largest available combo – 2 x 1500 hp MTUs is, of course, performance-oriented and gives the Marquis 65 a 32-knot top speed or a 27-knot cruising speed. An optional two-berth crew cabin and head acts as a buffer between the engine room and the guest quarters. The full-beam owner’s suite is amidships and feels wide enough to belong to a much larger vessel. It has a central king-sized bed, sofa, walk-in closet, bureau and his and hers bathroom areas separated by a central tub. There are also two guest staterooms forward: a twin and a double VIP, both en suite. The fly can be covered by a bimini top and has a second helm station to port flanked by two other seafront seats behind which is a bar. The latter serves a corner dinette. Marquis 65 owners can choose fabrics and colour schemes from an enormous catalogue. Many accessories (such as the washing machine, dishwasher and stern thrusters) are optional for an even more personal end product too.
