An all-american style trawler boat

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. And enjoy themselves too, as in the case of the Grand Banks 45 Sx, the top model in the Eastbay range built by Grand Banks in Singapore. Dedicated to people who love seafaring and who spend more time riding at anchor than clustered in overcrowded ports, the Grand Banks 45 Sx is a 15-metre that will cope with any sea and any weather. “Choosing Grand Banks,” explains Italian importer Paolo Murzi, “means choosing a trawler-style boat designed for people who spend their working lives at sea.” The kind of boat that casts off to go fishing when everyone else is running for shelter. “That’s the Grand Banks lifestyle – the luxury of making completely free, independent decisions,” he stresses. The Gb 45 Eastbay Sx is aimed at sportier kind of owner than the yard’s classic Aleutian and Heritage series. Its planing hull guarantees speeds of up to 33 knots and planes at 14 without being hard on fuel. It also boasts wonderful sea-holding. The design and lines of this deep water gem are the work of Raymond Hunt, the man behind the Grand Banks range. The Sx in the model’s name stands for Saloon Express, indicating an enclosed saloon with a hard top that connects directly to the cockpit. “The hulls,” explains Paolo Murzi, “are infusion moulded in our facility in Pasir Gudang in Malaysia on the border with Singapore.” The model has an excellent price to quality ratio as the Malaysians are master carpenters. The vacuum bagging process prevents osmosis. Furthermore, every hull is given three coats of epoxy gel coat to prevent corrosion over time. And also to keep maintenance work to a minimum. The Gb 45 Sx’s interiors are simple, linear and perfect for two to four people. There are no pointless bells and whistles décor-wise. Grand Banks offers a choice of two layouts. The first puts the galley and sofa to port on the upper deck with the pilothouse to starboard. Down on the lower deck, owners can opt for two cabins (one double, one twin) and either two bathrooms or one bathroom and a laundry room. The second version includes a double VIP cabin, just one bathroom and puts the galley under the saloon or replaces the guest cabin with an office with a jury bunk.
