Can you make a great boat design even better? Grand Banks did. The builder recently retired the popular Eastbay 54 SX from its line of Down East-inspired cruising yachts and replaced it with this 55 SX. The new model is based on the same seaworthy hull that made the 54 a standout in its class, but it has a whole new deck and deckhouse, each designed to make the boat even more comfortable and easier to operate.

The 55 has larger bonded windows, a longer enclosed salon and a helm that’s located farther forward for improved visibility. This model is also offered with optional interior layouts, including one that puts the galley up and aft, where it’s closer to the cockpit. The standard layout specifies an entertainment center aft to starboard and a large settee with a custom folding table opposite. Near the helm, there’s a smaller settee plus a clever swing-away table. The galley is down, opposite a luxurious master stateroom with a queen berth, built-in dresser and private head. A guest stateroom is forward. The boat I tested was equipped with a nice power sunroof.

Like all boats built by Grand Banks, the Eastbay 55 SX is designed for serious cruising note the wide side decks, stout stainless-steel safety railing and elegant heavy-duty equipment on deck. These features are integral to the boat’s appeal, as is the starboard-side door at the helm it’s a great feature for those who may be running the boat on their own.

The new Eastbay 55 SX offers wonderful views, great protection from the elements and the elegant accommodations that are associated with the Grand Banks name.
