48 Sea Ray Sundancer Sport Cruiser Review

Why is the Sea Rays 48 Sundancer so Special?

The 48 Sundancer has been the hottest new model in Sea Ray’s product lineup. She’s been highly successful since launched at the 2005 boat shows, meeting and surpassing production goals. Most dealers sold out their initial inventory at those shows and are now hungry for more.

Why is she so popular? Here are a few of the reasons …

After looking at the 48 Sundancer again recently, ” I was still impressed.” It’s a beautiful boat and a “bold” design choice for Sea Ray.

The Sea Ray 48 is a sport yacht with emphasis on sport. It replaced the 46 Sundancer that finished its production run last year.

Sea Ray made a complete retooling for the 48. She’s still a Sundancer but with a Euro flare. All the accommodations for entertain entertainment yet the power and performance to impress a true boater.

Let’s just say that women love this boat while many men are envious of it.

The most striking features are the fully integrated hard top with curved-glass windshield and an aerodynamic profile that makes it look fast even at anchor. I must admit these are not my words, but they are true and need to be said again. The hardtop comes with two extra-large sunroof hatches. They are grand. This has got to be an all time favorite with owners and want-to-be owners alike. This is the first sport yacht from Sea Ray that gives you a fully enclosed hardtop with the windshield. When underway, you feel like you are driving in an expensive car: air conditioning, heating with full climate control, she is very quite, and has startling speed and performance for such luxury.

Sea Ray has been working on noise reduction systems, and it shows. The sole of the cockpit has acoustic barriers and foam. The boat is comfortable and luxurious. Very classy and very open.

Add an LCD screen TV in the cockpit, and you’ve got a boating environment you can live with for a long time. The cockpit AC is nice but you still have plenty of sunbathing close by. Her on-deck living environment is totally integrated for a wonderful lifestyle on the water!

Sexy Curved Glass Windshield Gives Sea Ray’s Sport Cruiser Class and Plenty of Light

The windshield is one of the best I’ve seen. While it isn’t a walk-through and she has fairly narrow side decks to maximize the cockpit space. You still feel secure going forward.

There are plenty of handholds in the right place, so working your way forward port or starboard is no problem. Just right to carry a line or fender forward without needing two hands to hold on. As you can see in the photo, it makes for a beautiful boat as well.

A Fresh new Design Statement for Sundancer and Sea Ray Alike

Everything about Sea Ray’s new 48 Sundancer is designed to create a sense of flow and elegance. With its new contemporary shear line design, and its sweeping, tinted, curved-glass windshield that seamlessly integrates into the hardtop, this boat has to be the culmination of 45 years of forward thinking by Sea Ray’s designers.

Never be Out-of-the-Action Helmsman’s Seat

The 48 Sundancer has a new custom Euro-style, pivoting double helm seat that rolls out of the way to allow for more room.

The seat actually turns around so you can be part of the action. You no longer have to be cut off from the rest of the boat party. You are still part of the group, if not the ringleader, sitting in the captain’s chair.

The Huge Cockpit on the 48 Sundancer is Most Impressive

One of the most impressive features of the boat … the huge cockpit, provides as much living space above deck as there is below so people can bring their friends out for a day of boating and at the end of the day go back to the dock and have a sundowner and hourdevours.

The cockpit is huge. You have an enclosed area out of the elements with plenty of room in the back for getting sun outdoors. The aft, open cockpit area has large U-shaped seating and a wet bar with Corian countertop to port.

Sea Ray 48 Sundancer – Semi-Enclosed Cockpit

Above, the cockpit of the 48 Sundancer has been opened up and designed for entertaining. The social center provides everything a boat should have: A Sundeck, the equivalent of any resort pool and a Cocktail Lounge. Have a drink or wine, and cheese at the dock … or, raft up boats next to each other for a total extravaganza.

At the end of the day simply anchor over away from other boats for a private evening aboard. It does not get any better than that.

48 Sundancer’s Luxurious Accommodations

Sea Ray 48 Sundancer – Master Stateroom

When it’s time to turn in, you’ll enjoy the comfort of a full-size bed with innerspring mattress and coordinated sheets in the forward stateroom. A 17” LCD flat screen TV/DVD combo unit is also included. Separate head-to-port and shower-to-starboard both feature privacy doors accessible from the forward stateroom.

Below is a spacious mid-ship stateroom with twin beds and a nifty slide system to convert them to a queen-size bed. Guests will also enjoy their own private mid ship head and shower with seat.

Large Private Salon Below Deck

The large, private salon of the Sea Ray 48 Sundancer is well appointed, with new fabric and color choices, solid-surface countertops, and handcrafted hardwood cabinets and trimmed in cherry wood. Side windows open up the interior and bring in a lot of light. Sea Ray has solved the below deck cave feeling of some boats with plenty of natural light and views.

Sea Ray 48 Sundancer – Salon

It is clear to us that the luxurious salon has everything you need for entertaining, whether it’s a quiet dinner for two or a lavish affair for the whole crowd. A 23” LCD flat screen TV and DVD player is included in the ingenious entertainment center with etched glass and stainless-steel accents, along with a Clarion® XMD3 Sirius® satellite-ready stereo, CD changer, and amplifier/speaker system.

Sea Ray 48 Sundancer – Galley

The galley caters to your every whim with a two-burner stove, microwave/convection oven, upright refrigerator/ freezer, coffee maker, and much more.

Sea Ray 48 Sundancer’s Helm is Right Out of Star Wars

The helm setup is incredible. The control station looks like something out of Spielberg’s Star Wars. State-of-the-art navigational equipment including optional twin PC-based Navigator II GPS / chart plotter and chart plotter with radar overlay. Although it looks like a cockpit of an airplane, it’s very user friendly. You will pick it up fairly quickly with only a minimum of training. No advanced degree in electronics is required. Not nearly as complex looking as it looks and simple to use.

Sea Ray 48 Sundancer – Fully Equipped Helm

The Sea Ray 48 Sundancer has every control needed for unquestionably smooth sailing. That includes the custom Sea Ray SmartCraft® System View and diagnostics. The Raymarine RayNav 300 GPS with interface for system maintenance records, a VHF radio, digital LCD and all systems monitor panel, surrounded by a Linear Flux, and Gray Burl instrumentation panel in a Nickel gel-coated dash.

This head turning yacht offers a bounty of options from engine upgrades to new Sea Ray Navigator II radar/chartplotting system. When combined with cockpit air conditioning they ensure the 48 Sundancer can be refined to suit any sea-faring family and the skipper as well.
