42 Viking Convertible

42 Viking Convertible Review

Source: Peter A. Janssen, Yachting Magazine

For the first time in more than 20 years, Viking Yachts is moving down to the 40-foot range, introducing a new 42 Convertible this fall and then a 42 Open on the same hull in the winter. Twin 480 hp Cummins diesel engines will power both boats, married to Zeus pod drives for extra speed and maneuverability. The move to Zeus is a first for the fabled South Jersey builder, which gained a worldwide reputation for creating tough, fast, versatile fishing and cruising boats.

The 42 Convertible will launch first, in time for the Fort Lauderdale boat show that opens on Oct. 28. The 42 Open will follow and is scheduled for introduction at the Miami boat show in mid-February. The convertible, the smallest yacht in Viking’s lineup, which stretches up to 82 feet, will have the same attention to detail and high-quality fit and finish as its larger siblings. It also will have a two-stateroom, two-head layout with a large salon and dinette and a two-level galley. Viking’s signature cockpit mezzanine will provide plenty of room for anglers and crew to watch baits and relax, while the 122-square-foot cockpit provides the space to fight and land fish. The cockpit also features a pair of insulated fish wells, four flush rod holders, a transom door with a lift gate and a transom fish box. On the bridge, the helm is mounted on a center console with two Murray seats for the captain and crew. There’s extra seating on port and starboard lounges and on the front of the helm console.
