January 10, 2018 10:01 am

One of the main interest of yachting is privacy. The ability to travel and discover exceptional landscapes in total intimacy. With the Carribean and the Mediterranean are getting always more crowded, it’s getting harder to find secluded cruising grounds. While the Bahamas offer that to a certain extent, the most exigent yachtsmen are now heading for some more remotes cruising grounds. New Caledonia is most likely one of the remote destination that is truly attractive for cruising yachts.

New Caledonia is a long island, over 100miles, surrounded by a lagoon classed at the UNESCO. It’s famous worldwide for its exceptional diving sites. The warm waters and exceptional weather are everything that the coral needs to develop and grow.

Shark enthusiasts will fall in love with the Dumbea pass. Where hundreds of hammerheads, great white and reef sharks enters the lagoon. All this can be observed in only 25m of waters, in total safety. If you are lucky enough to visit the island while the whales are there, head for the southern lagoon. Get ready for the experience of a lifetime with humpback whales surrounding your yacht.

Once you grow tired of the seas, you can head down to the Pine Island. You will find natural pools, filled with smaller reef fishes and nurse sharks. The island is filled with endemic pine trees that are only found in New Caledonia, making it truly unique.

Out of the lagoon, within a few hour cruise is Ouvea. The island is a paradise on earth. About 20 miles long, the island is one incredible beach on one side, and rugged cliffs on the other. Perfectly protected from the elements, Ouvea lagoon is a must do in every yachtsmen’s life.
