There will be plenty of excitement when MarinaFest 2014 hits Burton W. Chace Park in Marina del Rey, Calif., on May 17 for a day-long boating celebration.
If boaters in the Los Angeles area need a reason to party, MarinaFest will mark the grand-opening celebration of new public docking facilities at Chace Park. The new docks replace 35 outdated boat slips with 44 new, state-of-the art slips for transient boats 26 feet and up. The docks are equipped with the latest pumpout system and updated electrical for today’s boats. In addition, reconfiguring the docks gained an additional 300 feet of side-ties to accommodate visiting vessels of diverse sizes.
It’s important to note that these new docks were partially funded by a $1.3 million grant from the National Boating Infrastructure Grant program. Every year, the program provides millions of dollars to build transient docks in locations around the country. It’s funding comes from the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund that, overall, provides a whopping $600 million-a-year for boating and fishing around the country.
MarinaFest highlights the fact that boating and fishing interests must focus support for renewal of the Trust Fund by Congress, and it’s up for renewal now. Moreover, some proposed changes in the program rules (amended from March 28, 2012) have just been published in the Federal Register.
MarinaFest will feature a variety of activities including a boat show, free boat rides, marine-related exhibits, water-taxi cruises, yacht club tours, L.A. County’s Fire Boat, community vendors, information displays, food and beverages. Beautifully landscaped Chace Park offers picturesque views of the harbor main channel, boats and marine life, picnic tables, BBQs, grassy areas, bike paths, boat docks, gazebos and more. Admission to MarinaFest is free.
“We’re having a great response this year,” says MarinaFest Committee spokeswoman Christine Rohde, “and there are still docks and vendor display space available to join this event that will draw hundreds of families to Chace Park.”
