The brainchild of none less than George Washington, the INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY stretches from New England to Brownsville, Texas – offering great yachting opportunities on both the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. A favorite section for yachtsmen is through the Carolina Coast. Picturesque cruising awaits you from the sprawling pristine sounds of North Carolina to Cape Fear Country, where historic Wilmington, North Carolina offers an array of Colonial and Civil War sites, superb seafood, top-notch resorts such as Wrightsville Beach, and a modern motion picture colony. On the North Carolina / South Carolina border, enjoy the community of Calabash, known throughout the Carolinas as the “Seafood Capital of the World.”
Cruise southward on the waterway and you’ll encounter MYRTLE BEACH and the SOUTH CAROLINA GRAND STRAND — one of the premier ocean-side resorts on the Atlantic coasts. Unchallenged as the “Golfing Capital of the World,” the Grand Strand features more than 100 top-ranked golf courses. It’s also famous for its world-class outlet shopping, its Branson-style musical theaters, its family-friendly amusement parks and more than 2,500 restaurants. Premier among its attractions is its 50-mile-long wide sand beaches, which gave birth to the name “Grand Strand.”
South of Myrtle Beach, the Waterway gently leads you through towering pine forests, past groves of moss-draped cypress trees and through the picturesque haunts of alligators, egrets and golden eagles, whose nests adorn the towering trunks of cypress and pine. Stop for an astonishing tour of Brookgreen Gardens, the former site of three Antebellum plantations and now home of the largest collection of outdoor sculpture in the world – including some of America’s most renowned sculptors. Dock at historic GEORGETOWN, the third-oldest settlement in South Carolina and stroll its riverwalk.
Farther south, the Waterway will lead you to CHARLESTON – the grand coastal pearl of South Carolina. Acclaimed for its Colonial architecture, numerous historic sites and outstanding restaurants, Charleston boasts an international arts festival – Spoleto – and is internationally famous for its Southern charm and culture.
Visit its extraordinary historic homes, sprawling nearby plantations, aging churches, acclaimed museums and famous historic sites – including Fort Sumter where the American Civil War began. Among Charleston’s many attractions are world-class shopping in famous-name stores and rows of fascinating antique shops.
Farther south, bask in the Old South charm of historic Beaufort, South Carolina and enjoy the beaches, shopping and upscale allure of nearby Hilton Head Island. Top off your Carolina Waterway cruise by edging into Georgia waters for a tour of another coastal treasure: the city of Savannah.
