ORCA is a sailor’s yacht with a huge cockpit, high coamings for safety, long benches for comfort, a large Destroyer wheel at the helm, excellent access to all running rigging and winches, and a great view forward over the low coach roof for sail trim and navigation.
Tartan Cruise Control Rig (CCR)
The Tartan 4300 has been designed with Tartan’s “cruise Control Rig,” a super versatile system whose key features are a double spreader tapered carbon fiber mast, a self-tacking 100% jib, and a masthead 150% reacher. The carbon rig is much lighter, stiffer and stronger than an aluminum rig, so the weight savings aloft provides the stability equivalent of (5) 200lb crew members on the rail. In short, you heal less due to the reduces moment arm of the rig aloft, the yacht remains more upright and is faster through the water with less air spilling out of the top of the sails. Upwind performance, between 30 and 75 degrees off the wind is incredible. Don’t be surprised to see 8.0-9.5 knots in ideal wind/sea conditions.
Tartan’s carbon fiber rig pulls so much weight out of the rig, the equivalent of five 200# men sitting on the toe rail, that the yacht accelerates quickly, heels less, and sails faster than others in her class. Aside from the benefits of the light but super strong carbon rig, upwind sailing is made easy by single sheet trimming for the jib. In the enviable ‘set-it-and-forget-it” mode, tacking is as easy as a turn of the wheel…the jib tends to itself and with the traveler mounted on the coach roof, the main is free and clear from the cockpit. Off wind, roll up the self-tacking headsail and unfurl the lightweight masthead reacher. The 4300 is canvassed for powerful reaching and downwind sailing. When it’s time to head for the harbor, the headsails are neatly rolled on the Harken furlers and the mainsail is conveniently furled with the LeisureFurl boom furling system, no sail ties needed, no muss or fuss. Simply stated, this Tartan 4300 makes performance cruising easy.
You may not find an easier yacht of this size or caliber that is so inviting for single-handing when desired. Electric primary winches and an electric cabintop winch allow you to handle the sails with the press of a button. Caught with your pants down with too much headsail when the wind builds up? Wrap the furling line around a winch and push a button. Want to trim the big reacher in spirited conditions? Just push a button. You can winch handle your way through it, but why would you? This is LUXURY yachting.

The Volvo Penta D2-55F with sail drive is a well-proven auxiliary engine that has earned a strong reputation among cruising sailors. Its 55-hp, four-cylinder diesel delivers excellent low-rpm torque, making docking, maneuvering, and powering through adverse conditions easy and predictable. The sail drive installation provides smooth, quiet operation with less vibration than many conventional shaft-drive systems, while also improving efficiency and reducing prop walk.
Owners praise the engine's reliability, fuel economy, and straightforward maintenance access. The integrated sail drive package is compact and easy for boatbuilders to install, making it a common choice on production cruisers in the 40- to 50-foot range.
Overall, the Volvo Penta D2-55F sail drive is a dependable, refined propulsion package that combines strong performance with excellent maneuverability, making it a favorite among serious cruising sailors.
The Tartan tradition of offering unmatched interior comfort is expanded in the Tartan 4300. ORCA features the 2-cabin, 2 head layout option with the “pantry” storage area and forward-facing nav station. Both cabins offer en-suite head access, and both cabins can serve as “main” cabins with spacious berths and ample storage. The center of the yacht has a large main cabin area with plush seating, lots of storage, and varnished cherry cabinetry. The galley is well-suited for preparing meals dockside or underway. Located to port, the galley also features the optional “pantry” storage option which offers additional storage lockers aft of the galley. A full forward-facing navigation station with electrical controls and a nav locker to house a full array of navigation equipment rounds out the central living areas. Aft, this 4300 is outfitted with a single sleeping cabin with en-suite access to the second head.
With her 13’-6” beam, ORCA’s main salon is quite luxurious. Solid American cherry woods abound. Ultra-leather pleated upholstery is thick and plush. This version has a pair of large captain’s chairs to starboard with storage table between them. A U-shaped settee is to port. There’s a filler board and cushion to fill in the port settee for extra overnight guests when needed. The 6’-6” high molded ceiling panels have solid cherry accent strips and recessed LED dimmable lighting. The accent strips, once removed, allow all ceiling panels to be removed for access to all deck hardware. The centerline solid cherry dining table has integral storage and foldable leaves and drawer storage for gear. It’s easily removable for easy access to the entire bilge from companionway steps to mast and beyond to the owner’s cabin forward. EVERY deck hatch and cabin top side port lights open for amazing ventilation – NO fixed windows anywhere on this yacht! Flooring is sold cherry. All bilge systems are easily accessed along the centerline of the yacht beneath the cabin sole. Large deep solid cherry storage lockers line the overhead spaces throughout the salon. Personal reading lights are in thoughtful places. The forward facing nav station seating brings this space together socially with seating in the main salon. There’s seating for seven crew in this space.
This Tartan 4300 features the extra spacious “pantry” layout option with a large extra storage space aft of the U-shaped galley and companionway space. There is ample countertop space for gourmet cooking, deep storage lockers for storing supplies for long passages, and lots of fridge and freezer space.
Unlike earlier models of the 4300, this model features the forward-facing nav station that is open to the salon for a nice and connected space. The nav station serves as a great base when weather gets rough and you’d like to pop below during a sea passage.

At the Tartan dealership here in the mid-Atlantic, Erin and I have spent hundreds of hours and thousands of miles on the Tartan 4300. We’ve sailed Lake Erie, the Erie Canal, Hudson River, Long Island Sound, Chesapeake Bay, and several trips up and down the east coast between Charleston, South Carolina and Boston, Massachusetts on this magnificent model from Tartan. We can’t say enough awesome things about this boat! Fast, gorgeous, comfortable inside and out, and so easy to handle, even single or short-handed.
Design & Layout, On Deck:
Her lines are timelessly classic but her function and performance are decidedly modern. Her hull and decks are the result of the latest advances in composite construction techniques. Her rig is all carbon, super light and stiff. Her Tartan-exclusive cruise control rig (CCR) allows a cruising couple to easily handle the boat in the most spirited sea conditions. Her huge cockpit, wide and trapezoidal shaped, accommodates multiple crew comfortably, whether actively handling the boat or lounging on the long and deep benches. High coamings are at a comfortable angle for long days at sea. The helm area is wide, the wheel large, and functionally ideal performance seating across the stern offers easy reach to both the wheel and large electric primary winches. The view forward and up towards the rig is excellent here. Wide decks, low coach roof, and well-laid-out deck systems, combined with the easily reachable LeisureFurl in-boom furling system, all make the deck easy to navigate from bow to stern.
Down below:
This is where Tartan further sets itself apart from most others in-class. The interior is a yachtsman’s dream. American cherry hardwoods abound, natural light fills the living spaces. Every port and deck hatch opens to bring in a cool breeze. Cherry accent strips across the ceiling tie the solid cream-colored ceiling panels to the satin finished cherry joinery and solid cherry flooring below. Dimmable general recessed lighting along with well-placed task lighting all cast a warm glow throughout the yacht at night.
As the chefs on most of our personal and delivery yacht voyages, Erin and I really love this galley. Abundant counterspace, large three-door access refrigeration, big double sink, and the customized ‘pantry’ layout provide HUGE amounts of storage for galley gear and anything else you need to keep close to the companionway steps and cockpit.
ORCA’s 13’-6” beam really shines through the galley, nav station and salon spaces. The open floor plan is enhanced by a 6’-6” ceiling height. The salon presents super-soft cream leatherette pleated upholstery, an L-shaped settee on port and two captain’s chairs on starboard. The forward facing nav station and open galley tie the entire space together socially when owners and guests gather below decks.
The owner’s suite forward provides a queen-sized centerline berth allowing a couple to climb in and out from the side, sleeping head forward, feet aft. There are several lockers on port and starboard for all your clothes. 0 top hatches and 0 side ports bring a refreshing breeze into the space at anchor. The ensuite head and stall shower.
Starboard side aft, the guest cabin provides an even larger berth, several storage cabinets, and private entrance to the ensuite day head/shower space.
Sailing Performance:
ORCA is a joy to sail. Her CCR (cruise control rig) and Leisurefurl furling boom can be completely handled from the safety of the cockpit. Reefing? Unlimited reef points, all set from the cockpit. Fully battened mainsail? You bet. Close hauled upwind sailing? Just set the main and self-tacking working jib and you can now forget both. All you do to tack is turn the wheel. Sailing off the wind a bit or downwind? Roll up the working jib and pull out the 150% reacher. You’ll be screaming along between 7.5 and 9.5 knots routinely. ORCA’s carbon fiber performance rig is so light, it’s the equivalent plopping six 200-pound crew members on the toe rail. Less heel, faster acceleration, more SPEED. Motoring, 2000 RPM at 67% load gets you just over 6 knots of boat speed and just under 1 GPH. 2500 RPM, only 83% load, and you’re easily cruising above 7 knots.
We’ve sailed another Tartan 4300 around Cape Hatteras in far less than ideal conditions, upwind, against the current, in very choppy 6-second period 12’ seas. She’s a solid boat. No creaking, minimal heel, dry cockpit, very safe, very comfortable for this sea state. Super easy to reduce the boom furling main and self-tacking jib to maintain a good balance of horsepower and comfort.
Tartan’s Famous (CCR) “Cruise Control Rig”:
The Tartan 4300’s “Cruise Control Rig” is one of the smartest shorthanded sailing systems ever fitted to a production cruiser. By combining a carbon mast, self-tacking jib, furling reacher, and a best-in-class LeisureFurl furling mainsail, the rig delivers impressive performance without the constant workload of a traditional setup. Tacking is nearly effortless – set the main and working jib – all you have left to do is turn the wheel when working upwind. Sail handling is remarkably clean, and the boat stays balanced and responsive even in stronger winds thanks to the reduced weight aloft from the carbon spar. Overall, the Cruise Control Rig turns the Tartan 4300 into a genuinely capable performance cruiser that two people — or even a solo sailor — can manage her comfortably offshore.
