Complete Refit! Everything was replaced or rebuilt between 2009 and 2017; only the fiberglass hull and deck are original. Perfect Love is offered in as-is condition, subject to a survey.
The Vagabond 47 was designed by William Garden as a long-keel offshore cruiser and was built with heavy hand-laid fiberglass, which was fashionable in the '70s. Perfect Love was built by Blue Water Yacht Builders Limited of Taiwan in 1975.
The current owners purchased the vessel as a derelict in 2008 and transported her to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she was stored on the hard. She was fully stripped and rebuilt, with only the fiberglass hull and deck shell remaining from the original. The hull and deck underwent necessary fiberglass repairs and were reinforced at high-stress points such as chain plates and through-hull fittings. The entire hull and deck topsides were stripped down to bare glass. After applying a new, heavy layer of gel coat, she was primed and painted with a two-part epoxy system (Interlux Perfection). The hull below the waterline was then recoated with five layers of epoxy resin, five coats of barrier paint, and three coats of ablative bottom paint. A new rudder was also constructed.
The new ash and teak interior was professionally built, surpassing the original in both appearance and quality. New bulkheads, chain plates, engine mounts, and mast compression posts were manufactured and installed. All deck and hull attachments are reinforced with heavy stainless steel backing plates. The engine, shafting, propeller, and generator are all new and professionally installed. The fuel tanks, made of heavy-duty aluminum, and the potable water tanks, crafted from food-grade stainless steel, are both new. The electrical systems (AC and DC), as well as the fuel and water plumbing, were professionally installed.
There is no wood on the yacht’s exterior; all wood-like materials are synthetic, UV-resistant PVC-based products that require minimal maintenance. The yacht features aluminum masts, Schaefer roller-furling booms, stainless steel standing rigging, and running rigging. The sails (main, mizzen, staysail, genoa, and code zero) were made by Mack Sails of Stuart, Florida.
A full suite of Raymarine electronics, including a hydraulic autopilot, has been installed. Mast-mounted cellular and Wi-Fi antennas provide internet connectivity to the onboard wireless Local Area Network.
Perfect Love was featured in the March/April 2018 edition of Good Old Boat Magazine (page 30).
All equipment and systems are fully documented, including complete wiring diagrams (every wire is labeled) and plumbing diagrams (fuel and water).

The interior of Perfect Love is beautiful. It features high quality, hand crafted joinery built of ash and teak. There are two cabins, two heads, a spacious salon, L-shaped galley and a proper navigation station.
The forward cabin has a double v-berth, with a large overhead hatch, cabinets outboard, two hanging lockers, a sink, vanity and toilet that is hidden in a cabinet. There is a built in dresser to starboard and storage in the head area.
Aft of the forward cabin is the spacious main salon. There is a U-shaped settee to port with a rotating coffee/dining table, and a settee to starboard with a movable bench. A flat screen TV is mounted on the port bulkhead. There are cabinets above each settee and storage below the settees. Eight opening stainless steel ports and a large overhead had provide plenty of natural light.
The navigation station is aft of the salon on the port side of the companionway stairs. There is a bench seat and opening nav desk. The electrical distribution panels are mounted outboard.
The primary head is aft of the navigation station. It is smartly designed with a dedicated shower area, toilet compartment and sink with vanity.
The galley is on the aft of the salon on the starboard side. There is a top loading freezer, top loading refrigerator, stainless steel sink, 4-burner stove with oven, a full height pantry with pullout shelfs, and plenty of counter and storage space.
Aft of the galley is the master cabin. It features a large berth, dramatic transom windows, and generous storage.
The Vagabond 47 ketch is a world-renowned, classic, blue-water cruiser designed by the famous Canadian naval architect William Garden.
Her form captures the spirit of a time when sailing ships represented the height of technology, and her function embodies the strength, safety, and comfort of a serious ocean-going yacht.
Hull number 148 was laid up in the Taiwanese yard of Blue Water Yachts, LLC, in 1975 for an Austrian gentleman. She was christened Incorrigible and claimed Lucerne, Austria, as her home port. The owner sailed Incorrigible across the Atlantic three times.
She was eventually bought by a Georgia businessman who renamed her Mechaya and sailed her for a few years in the Caribbean Islands. She sat on the hard at English Harbor in Antigua for five years after his death until his son began to sail her again. The son abused her terribly and left her to rot at the dockside while he smoked weed and burned through his father's hard-earned fortune. She was basically abandoned at Tierra Verde Marina in St. Petersburg, Florida, where I discovered her.
After negotiating for almost three months with the owner's widow, we finally reached an agreement. On August 8, 2008, I met her son at Tierra Verde, wrote him a small check, and took ownership of Mechaya.
I brought her back to Cincinnati, where I began a massive restoration project. She has been taken down to a bare fiberglass hull and deck and totally rebuilt, inside and out.
She has been re-christened Perfect Love and was launched in 2016.
The current owner purchased Perfect Love in 2022.
