SEA ANGEL is a rare Sparkman & Stephens-designed aluminum deck saloon ketch built by Stephens Marine in California, offering the kind of range, volume, and offshore capability that is difficult to find at this price point. Located in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, she is a true world-cruising yacht with serious long-range potential under power, substantial accommodations for owners, guests, and crew, and a meaningful list of updates to her rig, systems, electronics, and interior comfort. The current listing identifies her as Sparkman & Stephens design no. 2455, built in aluminum, with berths for up to 12 across six cabins.
What makes SEA ANGEL particularly compelling is that she is not simply a large classic yacht with presence, but a yacht that has seen thoughtful modernization in the areas that matter. In 2011, her original stowaway rig was replaced with a more modern Sparcraft aluminum mainmast and a custom James Betts carbon fiber pocket boom, allowing for a fully battened mainsail, lower weight aloft, easier reefing and sail handling, and improved sailing characteristics. Her sail inventory includes a Doyle fully battened main, a 2017 Doyle 110% genoa, a 2017 Doyle mizzen, staysail, and a 2021 spinnaker, while the hydraulic systems and winch package make handling a yacht of this scale far more manageable than many buyers would expect.
Below deck, SEA ANGEL offers the volume and separation expected of a genuine passagemaking yacht. Her accommodations include multiple owner and guest cabins aft, a full-beam master with centerline queen berth, his-and-her desks, and twin ensuite heads with a shared tub and shower, along with additional crew accommodations forward, a dedicated crew mess, and a large, functional galley. The deck saloon itself is bright and inviting, finished in teak with expansive windows, updated upholstery, and a secondary desk near the helm, creating a space that feels appropriate for extended living aboard as well as entertaining. Interior improvements noted in the listing include new salon overhead lining in 2017, a 60,000 BTU Ocean Air chilled water unit added in 2019, reverse-cycle air and heat, and updated entertainment systems.
Her systems profile reinforces that this is a yacht intended for real cruising rather than occasional dockside use. The galley is properly scaled for feeding a crowd, with extensive refrigeration and freezer capacity, a Viking Professional four-burner propane stove and oven, updated Sea Frost refrigeration compressors from 2019, supplemental Isotherm fridge and freezer systems added in 2021, a Sea Recovery Aqua Whisper watermaker rated at 1,200 gallons per day, and a Splendide washer/dryer updated in 2023. Electrical capacity is equally substantial, with 24V DC and 110/220V AC systems, two generators, a 2019 isolation transformer, Xantrex 4000-watt inverter, Rolls house batteries, and shore power inputs.
At the helm and in the wheelhouse, SEA ANGEL has benefited from significant electronic upgrades. The listing notes a 2017 Simrad navigation suite in the wheelhouse including chartplotter, AIS, autopilot, GPS, and GoFree Wi-Fi, along with alarm indicators for hatches, portholes, and bilge systems. Additional electronics include B&G instrumentation, Icom SSB with Pactor email interface, Standard Horizon VHF, SiriusXM weather, a 2017 EPIRB, Raymarine wind/speed/depth/temperature gear added in 2021, ST70 displays, a B&G autopilot remote, and a 2021 Furuno Wi-Fi radar. Taken together, that gives SEA ANGEL a far more credible navigation package than many older yachts in this size and price bracket.
On deck and underway, SEA ANGEL reads like a serious passagemaker. Her aluminum hull is described in detail, with heavy welded construction, substantial tankage, and only two through-hulls for safety and seaworthiness. Power comes from a Mercedes OM422W diesel with approximately 5,200 hours since rebuild, paired with a Hundested variable-pitch propeller whose electric drive and gearbox were replaced in 2017. The listing states a range under power alone of more than 2,000 nautical miles and notes owner cruise rpm around 1,400. Add in the Richfield 50 hp bow thruster, hydraulic windlass, 180 lb. CQR with 610 feet of chain, a second 140 lb. Danforth anchor, liferaft, refurbished teak decks, and a new epoxy barrier coat and bottom paint in July 2023, and the boat presents as a substantial expedition-style platform rather than a cosmetic project.
For the buyer looking for a proper long-range cruising yacht with true deck saloon comfort, crew capability, huge tankage, and classic Sparkman & Stephens pedigree, SEA ANGEL is a distinctive offering. She will appeal most to someone who understands the value of volume, range, systems depth, and seakeeping over fashion, and who wants a yacht with the bones and equipment to support extended cruising, liveaboard use, or even expedition-style family voyaging. In a market where many large older yachts are difficult to justify, SEA ANGEL stands out because her listing shows real capability and meaningful upgrades in the right places.

Accommodations aboard "Sea Angel" include 6 staterooms/cabins in total, providing berths for 12. Crew accommodations are forward, with 3 or 4 of the staterooms for owners and guests. Please see layout diagram for specifics.
SALON
There are three large windows to port and to starboard, three ports across the forward section of the house and two opening overhead hatches; combined these give the area a great deal of light and fresh air if desired. The salon is finished in teak paneling with high gloss teak molding and trim. Across the forward part of the salon is a wet bar and storage cabinet for glasses and table linens. The wet bar has a gold plated sink and faucet. On the port side of the salon is a built-in L-shaped settee with new (2017) upholstery. Starboard are two teak cabinets with sliding louvered doors. Aft, near the companionway and within feet of the helm, is a desk for office use or for use of the navigator as a secondary station. 2 New recliners installed (2021).
OWNER AND GUEST ACCOMMODATIONS
A four-step companionway leads from the centerline aft to the guest and owners’ accommodations below. Here the yacht is finished in an off-white linen textured wall covering. Moldings and door frames are varnished teak, and all hardware is brass. Doors have painted white louvers which are framed with teak moldings.
Moving aft from the salon, you’ll encounter port and starboard identical staterooms, each with two twin-sized berths. Both have built-in teak bureau with marble inlaid top between the berths, a large mirror, teak drawers beneath the berths, and a cedar lined hanging locker. Door handles and other hardware are of solid brass. At the aft end of the both staterooms are ensuite heads with showers. Each head has a Corian sink and countertop,, Vacuflush toilet, and a teak and holly sole.
The Master Stateroom is all the way aft and features a queen sized centerline berth with larger drawers underneath, two cedar line hanging lockers, a wrap-around vanity with chair to starboard and matching wrap-around desk with chair to port. Aft of the desk and vanity on each side are built-in bureaus, each with 4 sizeable drawers. At the very aft end of the master stateroom are ensuite his and her heads with a shared tub/shower in between them. Both heads have Corian sinks and countertops, teak storage cabinets, mirrors, cupboards for linens[1] . There are two large opening overhead hatches here as well as two opening ports on each side. Adjacent to the port hatch is a foldaway ladder with can be used as an emergency escape egress.
FORWARD ACCOMMODATIONS
A curved stairway leads from the forward starboard corner of the main salon to the galley, engine room and crew’s quarters below. The engine room itself is accessed via a door from the aft end of the lower companionway. Forward of the engine room entrance, and to port, is the large and well ventilated galley. The galley boasts extra large refrigeration and freezer capacity, white Corian countertops and extensive storage. Please see Galley section for more information.
Opposite the galley to starboard is a stateroom with an upper and lower berth. Because of this stateroom’s location, the owner uses it sometimes for family/guests and sometimes for crew. Immediately forward of the galley, on the port side, are a Splendide washer and dryer. Adjacent is a crew ladder which leads up to the foredeck. Opposite is a crew dinette with file drawers beneath the seats. Further along the companionway to port is the captain’s cabin with upper and lower berth, additional built-in drawers, a hanging locker, opening port, and 2 deck prisms. Just forward to starboard is the crew head with sink and shower. The shower is a shared with a second head which is located immediately forward. All the way forward to port is another upper and lower bunk crew cabin.

Other Electrical equipment:
In 2017, the electronics aboard “Sea Angel” were upgraded. A new Simrad Navigation Suite was installed in the wheelhouse. This includes chart plotter, AIS, go free WIFI, Autopilot, and GPS. The dashboard was redesigned and updated to house this equipment. On the dash is also an alarm system with indicator lights for hatches, portholes, and bilge. Gauges for the main engine and both generators are located here, along with joystick controls for both the bow thruster and for the Hundested variable pitch propeller.
Other Electronics:
Sea Angel’s large, covered deckhouse has isinglass curtains on three sides (new 2017), a fixed windshield forward and an opening overhead hatch. Around the aft part there is U-shaped seating with 2 tables. An additional custom tabletop stored under the chart drawers can be fitted easily to provide comfortable dining for up to 8 people. There are doors port and starboard to access the side decks.
DECK DETAILS:
In 2011, Sea Angel's original stowaway rig was replaced with a more modern arrangement. She now has a standard (and lighter weight) Sparcraft aluminum spar with a Betts carbon fiber pocket boom. This system allows for a fully battened mainsail, vastly improving her sailing characteristics. In addition, it is jam-proof and keeps the weight lower and closer to the center of gravity. The pocket boom will "catch" the mainsail beautifully making reefing or dropping the main easier on the crew. And raising the main is done with hydraulic winches.

A strong, beautiful, and classic Sparkman & Stephens sailing yacht, Sea Angel is a unique world cruiser. Sea Angel (Sparkman & Stephens design number 2455), built at Stephens Marine in California, was one of the groundbreaking motorsailer ketches designed in the 1980's. With accommodations for 6 - 8 owners and guests, and 4 - 6 crew, she can handle a large family and many guests with ease.
In 2011, her rig was modernized to employ a carbon fiber "pocket boom". With the hydraulic halyard winch, raising and lowering the main is almost effortless. This improvement allowed for a fully battened mainsail and a reduction of weight aloft, while eliminating the chance of a fouled in-mast mainsail. Moreover, her sailing characteristics were greatly improved by this upgrade in mainsail size and shape.
Sea Angel enjoys constant maintenance by her very knowledgeable owners. She is ready to leave on her next adventure! New bottom Epoxy Barrier Coat & New Bottom Paint (July 2023)
