Fjords, Bears, and Ancient Forest on Canada’s Wild West Coast

British Columbia’s coast is one of the great cruising grounds of the Pacific Northwest, a maze of deep fjords, forested islands, and glacier-fed waterfalls where whales surface beside the yacht and bears fish for salmon on the shore. Few places feel as wild, or as easy to enjoy in comfort.

Closer to Vancouver and Victoria, the Gulf Islands and the Sunshine Coast offer sheltered anchorages, shellfish, and kayaking, while Desolation Sound is famed for calm waters, warm swimming, and fjords where sea lions and whales are common. Farther north, Princess Louisa Inlet is a granite-walled gorge with more than 60 waterfalls, and the Broughton Archipelago, with over 200 islands, marks the gateway to the Great Bear Rainforest. This is the last largely intact coastal temperate rainforest on earth, home to grizzlies, wolves, humpback and fin whales, and the elusive Spirit Bear. At the outer reaches, Haida Gwaii, sometimes called the Galápagos of the North, adds ancient villages, towering totem poles, and a deep Indigenous culture.

Wildlife, wilderness, and adventure sit on every horizon, and a crewed yacht makes the whole coast feel effortless.
