Top 4 Viking Convertibles You Can Buy For Under $500K

Viking has led the market for high-end convertibles these days and it’s well known that used models are constantly in demand. With prices for new Vikings easily surpassing the $2 million (and up) mark, this article offers a look at what buyers with a budget of $500,000 can expect to find on the pre-owned market.

To get started, we ran a search on the boating MLS setting the asking prices from a low of $450,000 to a high of $550,000. The four Viking models profiled below came up time and again when entering those values at various times during the month of May, 2019.

Viking 58 Convertible [1991- 2000]

Quick View: An updated version of the earlier Viking 57 Convertible (1989–91) with sharper entry, increased bow flare and a redesigned ransom. The 58’s wide 18-foot beam results in expansive interior and cockpit dimensions. An enclosed flybridge model with salon access became optional in 1995, and updates in 1997 included restyled frameless windows and an extended flybridge. An extremely popular model, over 110 were built during a nine-year production run. MAN 1,200hp esgines cruise at 28 knots. Larger 1,400hp MANs cruise at close to 30 knots (33–34 top).

Viking 55 Convertible [1998–2003]

Quick View: A top selling model (153 were reportedly built), the Viking 55 is known for her elegant accommodations and remarkable performance. So popular was this yacht that many believe this to be as good as it gets in a sport fishing convertible of this vintage. The 55’s three-stateroom, galley-up floorplan has the master suite amidships, VIP forward and two full heads. A six-person dinette is forward in the 200-square-foot salon. The 55’s massive flybridge with its wraparound helm console provides seating for a small crowd. MAN 1,200hp diesels cruise 32–33 knots (35+ top)—impressive performance for a 55-footer.

Viking 50 Convertible [1991–2001]

Quick View: Best described as a scaled-down version of the popular Viking 53 Convertible (1990–98). The three-stateroom layout is similar in most respects to her predecessor, but with reduced dimensions. The master stateroom is amidships, a washer/dryer was standard, and the salon is open to the galley and dinette. Updates in 1997 included newly styled (frameless) windows. Standard power in 1991 was 730hp Detroit 8V92s however those engines were replaced in 1992 with 820hp MANs (26/30 knots respectively). MAN 1,200hp engines available after 1995 cruise at a fast 32 knots (high 30s top) making the Viking 50 one of the fastest boats in her class. Over 120 were built during her production run.

Viking 48 Convertible [2002–09]

Quick View: Introduced in 2002, it isn’t just beautiful styling that sets the Viking 48 apart from the competition; what makes her special is redundant engineering, exemplary finish and superior open-water performance. Built on a modified-V hull with a broad 16’6″ beam, the Viking’s wide open interior is big for a 48-footer. The layout is arranged with the galley and dinette forward in the salon with a choice of two or three staterooms below, both with two full heads. The 130 sq. ft cockpit sports a recessed fish box, bait prep station and direct access to the meticulous engine room. Note that the bridge ladder is positioned over the salon steps to save cockpit space. MAN 1,100hp engines (or 1,015hp Cats) cruise at an honest 30 knots (34–35 top).
