• Constructed by Blount in 1972, the Michael B. Meli is a ferry with a steel hull and aluminum deckhouse, specifically designed for navigating lakes, bays, and sounds. Certified by the USCG, its last dry dock inspection was in December 2021, holding the USCG official number 539334.

Dimensions and Capacities:

• The vessel measures 75 feet in length overall (LOA) with a beam of 18 feet and a hull depth of 5.7 feet. The draft is water at 5.5 feet and air at 23 feet, displacing 52.15 long tons. It can accommodate 149 passengers, 123 of whom can be seated on the main deck. The gross and net tonnages are 58 and 39, respectively.

Performance:

• Equipped with three 12-cylinder, 539 HP Detroit Diesel 12V-71 TI marine diesel engines, the ferry achieves cruising speeds of 18 mph at 1,200 RPM and can reach up to 21 mph at 2,100 RPM. Engine hours as of March 2021 were recorded at 927 for the port engine, 3,472 for the center, and 491 for the starboard engine.

Fuel and Water Systems:

• The ferry features steel tanks for fuel (800 gallons), waste (178 gallons), and potable water (112 gallons).

Navigation and Communication Equipment:

• The wheelhouse is outfitted with engine instrumentation, hydraulic steering, a fog bell, a compass, searchlight, two marine radios, a loud hailer, AIS, a chart plotter, two types of radar, and GPS.

Main Deck Features:

• Contains a salon area with twenty-two bench modules for passenger seating and a beverage bar equipped with essential amenities.

Electrical System:

• Powered by a 12 kW Northern Lights generator (with 6,600 hours logged as of March 2021), the electrical setup includes a ship to shore power switch, shore outlets, lighting, outlets, batteries, and a battery charger.

Hull, Superstructure, and Decks:

• The ferry’s hull is made of welded corten steel plates, and its deckhouse is constructed from aluminum, with six watertight compartments and convenient boarding doors.

Mechanical Equipment:

• Features detailed engine rebuilds, Twin Disc reduction gears, stainless steel shafts, propellers, and a water heater.

Facilities:

• A restroom equipped with standard amenities is available on the main deck.

Safety Equipment:

• Includes a comprehensive array of safety gear, such as personal flotation devices, life rings, a float light, fire extinguishers, a CO2 system, distress signals, and fire stations.

Finish:

• The exterior is finished with paint and nonskid decks, while the interior salon has carpeted floors and painted walls, including in the restroom.
