47' Custom Raised Pilothouse Trawler  - “Mischief”

Designed and Constructed in 2009 by Hugh Huff – Midland, Ontario

Built with a focus on strength, safety, and serviceability, Mischief embodies traditional displacement trawler principles:

  • True displacement hull for efficient, economical cruising
  • Raised pilothouse configuration with excellent sight-lines
  • Wide, protected side decks for safe line handling
  • Solid, conservative engineering throughout
  • Systems laid out for accessibility and ease of maintenance

Her Northern expedition-style profile is purposeful and timeless, projecting capability without excess.

Mischief is a rare, purpose-built 47' custom raised pilothouse trawler designed and constructed in 2009 by Hugh Huff in Midland, Ontario. Conceived as a Northern Alaska-style displacement cruiser, she reflects a philosophy of integrity, efficiency, and serious passage-making capability.

Engineered specifically for the demanding waters of the Great Lakes, the Great Loop, and extended coastal cruising, Mischief combines robust construction with refined craftsmanship and intelligent systems design. She is not a production vessel — she is a thoughtfully executed custom built for an experienced cruising owner who valued reliability, comfort, and long-range autonomy.

Cruising Capability

Mischief is ideally suited for:

  • The Great Lakes
  • The Great Loop
  • Long-range coastal passage-making
  • Extended seasonal cruising
  • Owner-operators seeking independence and reliability.  Her displacement design provides exceptional fuel economy at cruising speeds, predictable handling, and steady offshore manners. Mischief originally from Ontario Canada, has traveled through the Great Lakes, including Lake Huron, the St. Clair River, Lake Erie, through the Welland Canal, Lake Ontario, the Thousand Islands and up the St Lawrence River.  She then traveled down the Richelieu River to Lake Champlain and then the Hudson River and around Cape May.  Her Southern trip travels the Delaware River through Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk, then travels the ICW and Pamlico Sound to her current location in a fresh water basin South of Wilmington, NC.  She has been a fresh water vessel until recently and has traveled over 1,750 miles from Canada, experienced at least 40 to 50 locks and safely traveled down to the sunny South.

Pilothouse & Navigation

The raised pilothouse offers commanding visibility and a secure watch-keeping environment in all conditions. Designed for serious navigation:

  • Excellent forward and aft sight-lines
  • Comfortable helm seating
  • Full instrumentation array
  • Easy access to side decks for short-handed operation

This layout makes her equally suited to inland waterways and open-lake passages.

Interior Accommodations

  • Spacious salon with abundant natural light comfortable seating and table and chairs
  • Thoughtfully arranged galley for live-aboard functionality and clever storage areas
  • Comfortable owner’s accommodations with 2 single berths in the bow with ample storage
  • Guest quarters has 2 single berths midship and storage areas,
  • There are 2 restrooms onboard.  One has a sink area and head.  The other is complete with a separate shower area, sink and head as well.
  • Galley area with plenty of counter space and appliances to prepare tasty meals
  • Quality finishes throughout
  • Excellent storage for extended cruising

The interior strikes a balance between traditional trawler warmth and practical passagemaking durability.

Mechanical & Systems

True to her custom pedigree, the vessel’s mechanical spaces are laid out with clarity and service access in mind.

  • Clean, organized engine room
  • The Perkins 5.8-liter, 6-cylinder diesel engine
  • Renowned for reliability in agricultural, industrial, and marine applications
  • The  is a common variant, offering robust power and direct injection.
  • Commercial-grade systems philosophy
  • Long-range cruising efficiency
  • Designed for reliability and ease of maintenance

Every element reflects a build ethos centered on safety and longevity rather than production shortcuts.

Summary

Mischief represents a rare opportunity to acquire a true custom trawler — not a production compromise, but a vessel conceived and executed with purpose. She offers the strength and character of a Northern expedition cruiser, combined with the comfort and livability required for extended time aboard.

For the discerning buyer seeking a high-integrity, owner-driven build with serious cruising credentials, Mischief deserves careful consideration.
