INTRODUCTION:
The Kadey-Krogen 54 is a renowned long-range trawler that exemplifies the brand's commitment to seaworthiness and comfort. Introduced in 1988, only eight hulls were built, making it a rare and soughtafter model among cruising enthusiasts. Ursa Major was the first of those eight. Designed by Jim Krogen, the 54 features a full-displacement hull, a ketch rig for added stability, and a unique asymmetrical house design—a first for Kadey-Krogen at the time. With accommodations for up to six adults and ample storage for extended voyages, it offers a balance of practicality and elegance. The vessel's robust construction and thoughtful layout make it a favorite among those seeking a reliable platform for global exploration.
ACCOMMODATIONS & LAYOUT:
MAIN SALOON:
Ursa Major’s main living space, or saloon, is designed for comfort and versatility. It includes two swiveling recliner chairs and a built-in settee facing aft, complemented by an adjustable table. Natural light floods the area through five Diamond Seal windows, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere. Traditional teakstripped ceilings add to the classic aesthetic, while a pair of overhead handrails offer stability when underway. Her ceiling is also finished in a polished fiberglass inlay, in lieu of the traditional vinyl headliner.
GALLEY:
The galley aboard Ursa Major is a spacious, U-shaped area located forward and to starboard of the saloon, separated by a raised counter that facilitates interaction between the chef and guests. This layout ensures the chef remains engaged with social activities in the saloon while preparing meals. The galley is equipped with two Nova Kool 12V refrigerators, a Nova Kool freezer, and a Force 10 four-burner propane stove with oven. The galley also boasts custom Corian countertops and a tiled backsplash, combining functionality with a modern aesthetic. An opening porthole allows for natural light and ventilation, enhancing the cooking environment. This thoughtfully designed galley reflects Kadey-Krogen's commitment to providing comfortable and practical living spaces for long-range cruising.
PILOTHOUSE:
From the port side of the saloon and galley, and up a couple of stairs, you will find yourself in the ship’s primary command station – her pilothouse. Ursa Major received a complete reimagining of the helm starting in 2018 and finishing in 2021. She features a full Garmin navigation suite, upgraded new aluminum sliding doors, Custom helm chair, and a custom-built helm. The center forward windshield opens outward to allow ventilation while underway or at anchor.
LIVING QUARTERS COMPANIONWAY:
Leading downward from the saloon and galley is the ship’s companionway, connecting living quarters. This space features multiple storage opportunities, including a small work “shop”. The Splendide washer/drier combo unit is also housed here. Bilge access panels are below for convenience.
MASTER STATEROOM – MIDSHIP:
The master stateroom is located in the below living quarters and midship to starboard. It features a queen, fully walk around bed. The carpentry here is excellent and well thought out with abundant storage opportunities. While many midship master staterooms can sometimes be without natural light or natural ventilation, the opposite is true for Ursa Major. This is a very well lit and ‘breezy’ location thanks to the opening portlights and deck prisms, which draw in natural light and amplify it with no need for additional power consumption. The master stateroom also features a connected, ensuite head.
ENSUITE MASTER HEAD:
Forward and to starboard of the master bedroom is her ensuite head. The original bathtub was pulled and replaced with a 30” x 60” marble tiled shower; an absolute luxury in this class of vessel. The toilet is an electric, fresh water type. LED lighting, along with natural light from the opening portlight, provide a well-lit and well-ventilated space.
GUEST BUNK/OFFICE – PORT:
Located forward and to port is one of the two guest staterooms. This stateroom doubles as an office and work space, as well as a sleeping berth with its twin bunks. For convenience, the top bunk stows away. An opening portlight to both the exterior, and companionway – providing excellent ventilation and natural breeze opportunities.
GUEST HEAD:
Across from the guest bunk/office is a shared head that offers ample space and comfort. It features a fresh water electric toilet, a vanity sink, and an exhaust blower to maintain freshness. Storage lockers provide practical space for toiletries and essentials. A sizable stall shower includes a teak grate, adding a touch of luxury.
GUEST BERTH - FORWARD:
The second guest stateroom is located all the way forward in the bow. It features a double bed to port, ample storage including a hanging locker, and a sitting bench. Four opening portlights and an overhead opening hatch ensure ample ventilation – especially when anchored out and facing into the ocean breeze.
WORKING AREAS:
ENGINE ROOM:
The engine room aboard the 1988 Kadey-Krogen 54 Ursa Major is a well-organized and thoughtfully designed space, reflecting the vessel's focus on long-range cruising and self-sufficiency. Accessed via a hatch on the salon, the room offers approximately 4 feet, 8 inches of headroom and is equipped with twin Ford Lehman 135 hp diesel engines, each with around 6,000 hours of operation. Key features include Balmar 160A and 100A alternators, Naiad active fin stabilizers, dual Racor fuel filters, a fuel polishing system, Victron Energy suite, and a certified Fireboy fire suppression system. The room also houses a Village Marine 600 gpd water maker and three 3,700 GPH bilge pumps, ensuring the vessel is well-equipped for extended voyages.
EXTERIOR:
COCKPIT and TRANSOM:
One of the many standout features of Ursa Major is her cockpit and transom. The first thing you will notice is her canoe stern, which allows her to excel in many sea conditions, particularly following seas. A fixed bench settee follows the curves of the transom and also features a mounted teak table. A ladder to port ascends to the upper deck and flybridge. Another key feature of this area is a very crafty, built in gang plank on the aft starboard side of the transom. This is a well thought out feature as it aligns perfectly with a floating dock when tied to shore, and also serves as an ideal place to board your Offshore Cruising tender.
FLYBRIDGE and UPPER DECK:
The flybridge serves as an elevated command center, offering panoramic views for navigation and leisure. It features a helm station with full instrumentation, allowing for confident operation in various conditions. The space is complemented by seating areas, providing a comfortable environment for guests to enjoy the surroundings. Additionally, the flybridge is equipped with storage solutions, ensuring that essential equipment is readily accessible.
FOREDECK:
The foredeck is a versatile space equipped with a MarQuipt electric davit, facilitating the launch and retrieval of the Offshore Cruising Tender 330 dinghy. This tender, coupled with a 2022 Honda 15HP outboard, offers a stable and efficient means of shore access and exploration. The deck also provides ample storage for additional gear and water toys, ensuring the vessel is well-equipped for extended voyages. Ground tackle is also managed here from the teak bow pulpit and features both a Maxwell electric windlass, and a hydraulic winch.
SAIL RIGGING:
The sails' purpose was originally designed as a range extender keeping Ursa Major at hull speed whilst reducing engine rpm, providing significant fuel savings and the plus of the joy of sailing. The Krogen 54 has crossed the Atlantic on her own bottom. See the account of the passage in the Media section.
SUMMARY:
