Sportfishermen are designed to take you offshore, out where the big ones are, and bring you safely home. The Tiara 43 Open (Tiara has brought back that model designation for 2019) will do all that and more. With an economical cruising speed around 30 mph, her twin Volvo diesels and deep vee hull (17.5-degree deadrise at the transom) will get you out to the canyons in short order.

Speaking of diesels, our test boat was equipped with the optional twin Volvo D11 725-hp engine package which includes the Garmin full-glass-helm electronics package including bow thruster, joy stick, and trolling valves. The engines each drive a 2.5-inch Aquamet stainless-steel shaft with a bronze strut, water-cooled shaft log with a PSS dripless shaft seal, and a Nibral propeller. The single 600-gallon aluminum fuel tank has an in-line fuel vent and check valve and fuel shut-off valves on top of the tank for easy access. Access is also good to the Racor fuel filters and the raw water filters on both engines and the generator. A nice standard feature for a boat designed to go offshore are the three automatic/manual 2000-gallon per hour bilge pumps with helm station monitors. Also good for the peace of mind is the standard HFC-227ea agent automatic/manual fire extinguisher system in the engine room.

In typical Tiara fashion, the 43 comes with so many standard features it is hard to list them all. For example, the standard Garmin electronics package includes two GPSMAP 7616 touchscreen displays, a 17X high sensitivity GPS, a VHF 210 AIS radio, a 1kw B260 transducer, a GHP 10 autopilot, and a GMR xHD 2 pedestal with a GMR 404 open array radar. All this is supported by Tiara’s custom12V/24V DC and 120V/240V electrical system and an 80-amp battery charger as well as high output alternators and a 9KW Onan generator with sound shield. 

When you first board the Tiara 43 the first thing you notice is the size of the cockpit. It is large (95 square feet), uncluttered, and self-draining with side scupper drains, exactly what you need for boating big fish. A 24-inch square aluminum plate in the center is standard with the boat and serves as the base for an optional Release Marine BS 6-2 Battle Saddle fighting chair. The cockpit floor has five hatches for fish boxes, bait wells, and storage. An optional 50-gallon transom bait well is also available. A hot and cold water freshwater shower and a molded in-transom door and gate, as well as fresh and saltwater wash-down outlets complete with hoses come standard. Our boat had the optional swim platform and optional Tournament hardtop, which includes side enclosures, LED spreader lights, underside lighting and rocket launchers, and rod holders. A pair of optional Rupp 30-foot outriggers completes the serious fishing-machine look.

The cockpit on the Tiara 43 Open is large, uncluttered and self-draining.

The standard deck hardware on the 43 would be hard to improve. There is a bronze hawse pipe on each quarter, four 10-inch and four 12-inch stainless steel cleats, a molded in-bow pulpit with a stainless bow roller, and a one-inch 316L stainless pulpit and bow rail. The flush anchor-rode locker drains overboard and houses a rope/chain electric windlass controlled by a foot pedal or a remote switch at the helm. The boat comes with a 40-foot chain rode, a 200-foot rope rode, and a 35-pound Delta anchor. The side decks are adequate, and the composite windshield frame includes hand rails on the sides.

The upper cockpit includes an aft-facing mezzanine seat with storage underneath, a portside wet bar, and rotating helm and mate’s seats. With the addition of the optional table and a forward facing seat portside aft, this area becomes a lounge for entertaining. The centerline companionway gives access to the salon, kept comfortable by a marine Air Systems 10,000 BTU air conditioner/heater. The L-shaped galley to starboard features Corian counters, a stainless sink, a two-burner cooktop, microwave/convection oven, and Vitrifrigio dual-refrigerated drawers. Also to starboard is the all-fiberglass head, with shower, with dual entry from the salon and master stateroom. The master sports an adjustable-pedestal queen-size bed. A bi-fold door offers full privacy. On the port side, aft of the master is a small, but adequate guest cabin with over and under single bunks and a lot of storage space. Aft of the guest is a U-shaped dinette that converts to a double bunk. 

My host for the sea trial, Grady Byus, from North Point Yacht Sales used the joystick to ease us out of a tight slip at Bert Jabin’s Yacht Yard. The 43 responds instantly to the joystick and is easy to control in tight spots. We idled down Back Creek in low-speed mode, which deploys the trolling valves in the transmissions and allows a speed of only a couple of knots. Once out of the creek we accelerated slowly to cruising speed. As the boat came up on plane, with zero trim tabs, there was some bow rise, but visibility forward remained clear and unobstructed. As we cruised into the light chop the noise level was pleasantly low, both at the helm and below, with normal conversation possible. When I asked for a wide-open-throttle run, Grady mentioned that the D11s are big engines and take a moment to spool up. We started to accelerate. When the turbos kicked in, she jumped up on plane and we were instantly doing 36 mph plus. The deep-vee hull tracks smoothly and responds to control inputs precisely and predictably.

In short, I think that Tiara has created a very successful dual-purpose boat in the 43 Open. She works well as a fishing machine and as a comfortable cruiser for six.

The wind blew steady from the east and pushed some hefty rollers toward the coast. Meanwhile, the outgoing tide ripped through the narrow confines of the Fort Pierce inlet, meeting those swells head-on. The resulting mess could be described as a confused headsea or as a salty friend calls such conditions, “delamination time.” As we pointed the bow of the new Tiara 4300 Open toward the inlet, Dave Walsh, Tiara’s marketing manager, and Rick Eggerding, the director of product development, looked at each other and smiled. This is the kind of sea state that can make or break a boat’s reputation, so we had no choice but to throttle up and hold on.

Consider the 4300 Open’s reputation made. We took water over the bow and shots from the side and had one drop into a deep trough. The cockpit cleared the water in no time, and I felt not a single shudder or rattle as we powered through the morass. The only part of the boat that didn’t fare well was the Tiara burgee on the bowrail, which came untethered and looked a little ragged after a time.

Don’t consider that an omen as the 4300 Open ably replaces the old 4200 as the flagship model in the Tiara Open lineup. The new version adds a foot of LOA, five inches of beam, and a short ton (2,000 pounds) of weight. What remains the same is her sturdy construction. Tiara starts in the mold with a hand-laid skin coat of vinylester resin and cores the hull sides with balsa. The major components are prefabricated, single-piece, closed-molded parts. The deck is also closed-molded and balsa-cored while the stringers are cored with wood and foam and integrated into the hull structure. Add to that a sharp entry, generous bow flare, and reversed chines, and you have the reason for our shudder-free ride.

When we came about and headed back through the inlet on a following sea, the 4300 Open never lost her tracking, thanks in part to 17.5 degrees of deadrise at the transom, on the higher side compared to similar boats (many in this range fall between 11.5 and 18 degrees). Her heavier build also helped. Whether you get this boat in the fishing or cruising version, you will appreciate her seakeeping. Sitting in the double-wide Stidd captain’s chair at the helm I felt more than comfortable operating the boat in the heavy offshore swell. I did note considerable bowrise while climbing onto plane, an observation supported by the trim numbers recorded during testing in calmer seas. But that was my only operational issue.

The 4300 Open also remains true to her predecessor in terms of propulsion with straight-shaft inboard Cummins diesels. Tiara was one of the first builders to design boats specifically for IPS pod drives, and in the sportier 4300 Sovran, that system is de rigueur. “This is a more traditional, heavier boat,” says Walsh of the 4300 Open. “We love IPS, but matching the propulsion for this hull takes us in the direction of the straight drive.” To heed the growing demands of the remote-control crowd, Tiara does offer a ZF joystick and bow thruster package as an option.

Our test boat also featured the Tournament Series option, meaning she was equipped to fish. She had the fishing hardtop, which is stout enough to support a custom tower and includes LED spreader lights, a teaser-reel compartment, four rod holders, and side enclosures for nasty days. The cruising hardtop is thinner and sleeker and eschews the aluminum piping. (There’s also a no-top option.) Both hardtops feature an improved helm-ventilation design, compared to the 4200 Open’s. Instead of the old version’s powered vent in the windshield that blew air onto the helm and passenger, the 4300’s vents are integrated into the hardtop and flow air down from above. I enjoyed the fresh air in my face on this 80-degree afternoon, and when latched down, the vents proved watertight while running the inlet. Plus, the single windshield mullion, compared to two on the 4200, enhanced visibility at the helm.

I relinquished the controls to Eggerding and enjoyed the view from the forward-facing, double-wide passenger seat on the helm deck. The seat rotates to a sideways position to complete the L-shape lounge on upper cockpit. It’s a nice feature that allows the passenger to see what’s in front underway, then turn the seat to enjoy a conversation with others at idle speeds or on the hook.

To watch the fishing action, the best seat in the house is the aft-facing bench on the mezzanine. There’s an option for a bait-prep station with an ice maker for fishing or a wet bar and a drawer refrigerator for cruising. Stepping down into the cockpit, I took out a tape measure to record the dimensions: 95 square feet of open deck below the mezzanine. Anglers will appreciate the additional work space, up from 87 square feet on the 4200, as well as the straight transom, a change from the previous model’s reversed transom. Our test boat had almost every fishing feature on the options list, from the 50-gallon transom livewell to macerators in the spacious fishboxes to the gunwale rod holders. Tiara glasses an aluminum backing plate into the cockpit sole for mounting a fighting chair. If you’re more inclined to cruise, you can opt for a different seating arrangement, like a fold-down transom bench or L-shape aft cockpit lounge.

I didn’t go below decks until we made it back into calmer waters. Although I appreciated the teak interior and sole, Corian countertops, and dual refrigerators in the galley, what caught my attention was the additional stateroom. Where the 4200 Open had just the master forward of the saloon the 4300 also has a guest stateroom to port opposite the head with bunks. The saloon settee converts to a double berth and a pullman upping sleeping capacity to seven.

What else did I like? I noticed how, walking out to check out the windlass and the anchor pulpit, I always had a handhold, easily transitioning from the hardtop handles to the optional aluminum bowrail as I moved forward. The bowrail came up to mid-thigh, safer than the shorter cosmetic rails found on some boats that are just tall enough to trip over. That burgee had seen better days, but everything else onboard should keep Tiara’s excellent reputation as a builder intact.

The newly-launched Tiara 4300 Open was designed to replace the hugely popular 4200 Open and serve as a response to customer feedback. Some significant design changes were made to the layout, and some others were carried over from the old 4200 to this model. The bottom line is a (slightly) bigger and (very much) better yacht. Given her fast-paced boat show schedule, current images aren’t even available on this boat yet, and won’t be until about the middle of next month, but until they are, we wanted to point out some of the features that are new and unique to this boat.

To start with, as you may have guessed, it’s bigger. One foot (.3 m) bigger, and it’s added to the cockpit. Tiara has gone with a straight transom and kept the widely popular mezzanine seating and the option of choosing between a bait prep module or an entertainment center with refrigerated drawers.

Overhead Integration

One significant change is in the hardtop. While still an option (add $29,090 for the cruising hardtop and $33,780 for the tournament) it’s in the integration to the windshield that’s different. Previous versions had a space between the hardtop and the windshield that typically got filled with isinglass. Now, Tiara has removed the power opening vent from the bottom center of the windshield, and replaced it with an integrated system at the top of the windshield. This results in a vastly improved air flow with visibility improved exponentially as well due to the fact that there is now only a single mullion running down the middle of the windshield.

New Cabin Layout

Gone are the days of the single berth forward and a settee that converts to a berth. Now, the 4300 features a two stateroom design with the master forward and a guest stateroom with over/under bunks to port. This is a vast improvement over the previous design and should be a huge hit with the families shopping the 4300 for use as a fishing/cruising boat.

This is a major change in our book, and it makes this boat more desirable, we think, than other boats in this class with just one dedicated cabin, or one cabin plus a large hanging-locker with a berth squeezed into it.

A feature that Tiara aficionados will be glad is here to stay is the full length skylight over the saloon that bathes the room in natural light.

Keep It Quiet

Tiara’s Dave Walsh tells us that the company worked long and hard to lower the noise level throughout the boat as well. Aside from design changes to the engine room access, Tiara has added sound deadening features such as insulation, seals, and isolators to create, what Tiara says, is their quietest straight drive boat to date.

As far as performance goes, obviously it is too soon to tell, but you will get a rough idea by looking at our test numbers of the old 4200. The 4300 should be able to improve upon them slightly.

We’ll look forward to doing a touch and feel to the new 4300 soon and verifying these and other items. Until then, you have to hit the South Florida boat show circuit to get an early look at this new and improved version. We’ll certainly be looking forward to our peek.
