Imagine cruising Florida in the winters and New England in the summers OR marina and restaurant hopping plus joining Nordic Tug “Rendezvous” with the cruising crowd OR anchoring in any of the thousands of isolated coves of the Chesapeake or beyond, completely out of sight of anyone, then just rolling off the swim platform for a cooling dip. This NT 32 has lived all three of these lifestyles. Charley's Tern is a well-loved 1998 Nordic Tug 32 that has been owned & operated by the current owner since 2009 & has been professionally maintained, properly winterized every year & stored on the hard during the winter season.
With its marine version of the famous Cummins 6BT, known as the “Million Mile Engine” in the trucking industry and its 200-gallon fuel capacity, it has a range of 1000 miles at sailboat speeds. Yet its 220 HP and semi-planing hull design makes it able to be used in a hurry when needed. Cabin cooling and warmth comes from dual AC/heat systems, front, and rear, with an engine heat option from a third heater. The stove is propane so no need to run the 6KW generator to prep a meal. However, if the seldom used generator (only 360 hours) is needed, it is quiet in its isolated noise control box with a water-lift muffler exhausting under water so as not to disturb anyone on-board or nearby. The side-by-side, refrigerator and freezer, makes resupply runs scarce. The side-by-side helm seat and a double berth in the forward cabin keeps the Admiral and her Skipper close by as well. The salon couch converts to more sleeping capacity.
Nordic Tugs are designed and built in Washington State being highly stable and strong for the North Pacific with the objective of serving “discriminating customers looking for the ultimate cruiser, secure in the coastal waters, and preferring quiet operation.” The stained glass windows in the aft doors is but one example of the quality, classy touch. This one, since 2009, has been plying the entire Chesapeake including exploring its many large rivers. It has dual depth finders and a full skeg keel protecting prop and rudder for safe exploring where water depths might suddenly drop below its 3’ 8” draft. A bow thruster maximizes maneuverability and simplifies docking. Professionally maintained, winterized, and land stored in the off-season. The boat is fueled, cruise ready including tools, and ready for its next adventures. Local experts judged the boat to be “As nice as they come”.
