Few boats speak to the history of American boat building as prominently as those with roots to the Maine shipyards of the Henry R. Hinckley Company. The Henry Hinckley designed Hinckley Sou’wester 50 yawl does so with aplomb. Her graceful shear, traditional overhangs and classic sail plan are reminiscent of an era when gentlemen might not have sailed to weather but sail they did. GRACE is a fine example of this genre and has led a pampered life. Stored indoors each winter and cruised locally in New England, GRACE also benefits from excellent upkeep and continues updates. Recent bow thruster, watermaker, electronics, sails, rigging, and paint, are a few examples of the work completed. It is the basics that keep bringing keen sailors back to Hinckley and GRACE more than gives a nod to those. She is strong, seakindly, and seaworthy, a proper vessel in every sense of the word. GRACE is also a movie star, playing a big role in the 2022 movie “Confess, Fletch” with Jon Hamm and Lorenz Izzo.

GRACE has a one-piece fiberglass hull. The deck, deckhouse and cockpit are molded in one piece with integral fiberglass stiffeners and bolted and fiberglassed to the hull on a six inch flange. The lead keel is fastened externally with stainless steel bolts. There is a cast bronze 500 lb foil shaped centerboard using the standard Hinckley type worm lift. GRACE has a forest green Awlgrip-painted hull with a gold leaf Hinckley cove stripe white boot stripe. The bottom is painted with white antifouling. Canvas is beige. There are covers for the dorade boxes, handrails, hatches, winches. All the exterior brightwork has been maintained and is immaculate. Combine this with recently painted masts and GRACE’s exterior clearly meets the Hinckley standard.
GRACE’s cockpit is protected by a dodger and wide coamings. Varnished teak coaming seat backs house two storage cuddies on each side. A removable canvas bimini top extends from the dodger to the mizzen shrouds. A varnished teak “flip up” helm seat is secured to the mizzen mast with bronze hardware. A teak footrest hinges up from the cockpit well. The cockpit sole is inlayed with teak and rubber. The engine gage panel is recess-mounted in the bridgedeck and visible from the helm. Two huge lockers are on either side of the cockpit, below the gasketed and guttered seats. Another deck locker is aft of the mizzen mast and accessed through a varnished teak hatch.
GRACE is a Stowaway Yawl and fitted with electric in-mast mainsail furling and manual in mast mizzen furling. The headstay furling line is lead aft to an electric self-tailing winch in the cockpit. This easily managed rig provide flexibility for ocean voyaging, coastal and day sailing. All hardware is top quality and oversized. Deck hardware, sails, and running rigging have been updated to take advantage of technical and material advances while maintaining the traditional Hinckley aesthetics.
