Built in 1988 in Lahaina on the island of Maui, the Hawaiian Chieftain is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional design. She has the rig of a 19th Century Trading Vessel and a modern Triple Keel. She is highly maneuverable in shallow waters.

The Hawaiian Chieftain was commissioned by Laurence Dorcy Jr, designed by nautical architect Ray Richards and built by Lahaina Welding Co Ltd; Drake Thomas was the Ship's Builder. Her maiden voyage was to French Polynesia on April 1, 1990 arriving in Papeete on April 20, 1990. She was based in Sausalito, CA for many years, sailing up and down the coast with the Lady Washington on Voyages of ReDiscovery, providing hands-on history programs teaching 4th and 5th graders about the exploration and trade along the West Coast in the 1790's.

In the winter of 2004, she was sold to a Cape Cod sailing program and renamed the Spirit of Larinda but due to a health situation the boat became inactive. In October 2005, the Gray's Harbor Historical Seaport Authority (GHHSA), owner of Lady Washington, purchased her to add to it's fleet. Returning to her original identity as the Hawaiian Chieftain, she joined the Lady Washington on February 25, 2006 to provide joint education and sail training up and down the west coast of the United States. In February, 2020, GHHSA announced they would be retiring Hawaiian Chieftain to focus on the operation of the Lady Washington.

In July 2021, she was purchased by the current owners who began the restoration to bring her back to 100% and once again be able to run charters, events, tours and offer educational programs and sail training opportunities. The boat has been successfully operating out of Port Townsend, Wa. The situation has changed for the current owners and now the vessel is available for new ventures!

The vessel is currently hauled out in the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven and available for in-person or video showings.

Please see 'Other Details' to see the extensive list of Upgrades completed by the current owners. The Hawaiian Chieftain is ready to head for any horizon with nearly all new systems, rigging and equipment! The Hawaiian Chieftain draws attention where ever she goes and people love sailing aboard her! The vessel is ready right now for her next adventure!
