Isobar Boat | 45' Cheoy Lee 1962

"Isobar" is a beautifully restored and maintained custom sloop with a long and storied history.

Built in 1962 at the renowned Cheoy Lee Shipyard in Hong Kong, Isobar is a 45’ LOA full-keel sloop with a 12’ maximum beam and a 28,000 lb. displacement. Her original design was a monocoque wineglass hull of strip-planked Philippine mahogany, spacious teak decks and a counter stern. She sports a low aspect mainsail rig (48’ deck-stepped mast with a 22’ spar) built for the largely downwind run of the TransPac. While she is a custom design lofted by Les (a naval architect by trade), her lines take inspiration from the big Sparkman & Stevens designs -- most noticeably the 52’ yawl Dorade. Asa mechanical engineer, Don designed the fittings and systems.

After her many adventures with Les, here original owner beginning with 2 Transpac's in 63, & 65, Numerous other West Coast races, cruising, and 3 transatlantic crossings, Mediterranean and East Asia trips, Malaysia, Thailand and beyond.

In 2006 the current owners bought her back for the second time and brought her back to Seattle where she underwent a massive three-year restoration that replaced the entire deck, the top 8-10 courses of the hull bulwarks, the cockpit structure and the cap rails. Repairs were made to the boom as well as the house. The hull below the waterline was stripped and recoated in fabric and epoxy resin. The engine, fuel lines, exhaust system, batteries, refrigeration system, propane system, galley stove, bilge pumps, and all cockpit and nav station instruments were also replaced. Since she was coming from an extended stay outside the United States, a new voltage converter and holdingtank were also added. The propeller, mainsail and all running rigging were replaced, and the number of winches was greatly reduced.

She was re-launced in 2010 and has sailed the Salish Sea since and she continues to impress everywhere so goes including awards at the Victoria Classic Boat Show and Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival.
