Once again, Palmer Johnson has masterfully blended design and technology to create another refined sport cruiser with the DNA and design codes of a pedigree superyacht brand. Like every Palmer Johnson, the PJ 63 Open Sport has the genes of its legendary predecessors. The PJ63 is Palmer Johnson’s smallest yacht but there are no quality concessions with this size at Palmer Johnson. The PJ63 is the first fully carbon composite yacht of these dimensions and represents a bold move to enter and dominate this open sport category.  

Open yachts have their place in the industry and there is no good reason why they can't be just as beautiful, sporty, and luxurious as their much larger counterparts, except on a smaller scale with regard to size. Not all yacht enthusiasts are in the market to purchase a super yacht for charter or for longer extended cruises. Some simply want a smaller classy version that features great dependability, functionality and comfort. Add the luxury aspect and you have the perfect formula.

Aesthetics were an important consideration when designing the Palmer Johnson PJ63 line. The smaller size lends itself to the creation of a yacht that would feature sleek lines in combination with curved surfaces that would create an attractive exterior that would have eye appeal on several levels. It would promote the sense of sensuous aggression with one sweeping visual motion.

The PJ 63 Open Sport is the latest expression of PJ’s forward thinking design ethos together and uncompromised respect of artistry and craftsmanship.

The new PJ63 is a result of Palmer Johnson's new focus on hull technology and lightweight construction. A yacht with reduced fuel consumption and thus carbon emissions of 33%-50% across the speed range.

The hull is a refinement of the PJ tri-hull previously used on the much-admired PJ48m Khalila, PJ's first groundbreaking fuel-efficient superyacht. When Palmer Johnson delivered its full-carbon motor yacht Khalilah in 2014, it was the shiny, gold James Bond exterior that caught the eye of every passerby. What onlookers weren’t aware of was the tri-hull lurking beneath the water, which made the 157-footer more fuel efficient than most other similar-sized monohulls. Eight years on, the American boatbuilder’s newly launched 63 Sport Cruiser takes its refined lightweight hull technology to the next level, offering reduced fuel consumption and 33 to 50 percent fewer carbon emissions.

This PJ 63 advanced hull is also designed for comfort. It’s very fine bow and curved sections aft provide a smooth, soft ride all the way to a top speed of 34 knots. The displacement characteristics include a low banking angle in highspeed turns, no slamming and a level ride throughout.

Another key feature of this latest Palmer Johnson is that top speed can be comfortably sustained in a seaway when typical planing yachts would have to throttle back. A 30+ knot cruise is not a spine-jarring or white-knuckle experience, nor a conversation stopper. It’s more Bentley, less Lambo.

With its generous 6.3m (21 FT) beam the PJ63 has the largest open deck lounge in the 60ft-80ft class. The below deck space consists of a spacious full-beam master cabin, a salon/galley, and a forward guest cabin. The PJ 63 Open Sport most certainly appeals to buyers who keep dayboats at their vacation homes everywhere from Miami and New York’s Hamptons to the Cote d’Azur and Spain’s Balearic Isles.

The development process for this innovative hull form was based on delivering a high-tech product of the highest quality in terms of structural integrity and surface finish. The advanced epoxy prepreg resin technology SPRINT™ by Gurit is used to manufacture this unique hull, guaranteeing high tech mechanical performance and light weight properties. SPRINT™ materials consist of 1 or 2 layers of fiber reinforcement combined with a pre-cast, pre-catalyzed resin film. The material therefore has the appearance of dry reinforcement, which has resin concealed at its center.

Extensive FEA was performed in the structural engineering to optimize strength and weight. The structure is predominantly carbon except for the hull bottom which is built with GRP after a study showed that this more elastic material will give a softer ride.

The strong shoulder flows from the bow and wraps itself into a transom blade. This is a signature design element of the Palmer Johnson Sport series. The distinctive PJ bow design and fine hull entry.

Palmer Johnson’s signature unibody design and blended sculpted surfaces intersect with sharp crisp lines and a clean flush deck. The boat’s all-carbon superstructure glimmers in metallic paint, with a shoulder that sweeps from bow to aft giving a hint of sporty aggression. From the open helm, uninterrupted views spread far. A partial hardtop throws shade when needed. 

There are sun loungers aft for relaxing at the water’s edge, steps for convenient access to the water and lounging sofas for cocktail hour. The deck space is offering two main zones which are divided in the sense that the inner zone is covered by the hard top and the other is more aft and in the open. The aft seating forms to function as sunpads while the forward section is a bit more formal served by two smaller cocktail tables. The hardtop with its aggressive yet refined C-shaped supports and then beefy black top punctuated with a few windows to allow for natural light to pass through to the general space.

The 20’ 63” FT beam also gives the PJ63 the largest open deck lounge in the 60ft-80ft class. That allows plenty of room for a full-beam master on the lower deck ideally located amidship, along with a large salon ideal of entertaining, an open galley and a forward guest cabin. 

The interior serves an "evocative retreat" that utilizes modern shapes with white as the base and warmer tones for color contrast. Indirect LED lighting punctuates various corners and gaps, drawing the eye towards a uniform design flow throughout the interior. The same design language filters into the cabins making it a playful but relaxed atmosphere. The full-beam master cabin features a window seat for relaxing and watching the scenery go by while underway or at anchor.

The PJ 63 can either be the ultimate day cruiser or a very exclusive chase boat for a superyacht owner. In addition to her fabulous outdoor spaces, ideal for lounging and socializing.

First hitting the water in May of 2022 and making its debut at the Monaco Yacht Show 2022.

The PJ63 Open Sport is a part of the new line that is intended for shorter excursions to destinations such as Cote D'Azure, Miami and Ibiza. The head of their design department commented that preservation of the quality which is displayed with the larger yacht models is important but that there was a great need to make these options available to a larger cross section of the population. Not everyone has the ability to purchase a super yacht, but the smaller versions are priced for greater affordability to more people who have an active interest in becoming a yacht owner.

With the PJ63 Open Sport on the water, Palmer Johnson is currently developing a series of Open Sport cruiser yachts and the first 15-meter (50 FT) hull will be launched in a few months. The Open Sport Series is based on the fully developed tri-hull form and there will be a fully electric version as well.
