Pacific Drifter Boat | 42' Kadey-Krogen 1991

Pacific Drifter is a 1991 Kadey-Krogen 42 Widebody that combines the proven cruising capability of the Krogen 42 with considerably more interior space than the standard arrangement. She has been thoughtfully equipped for extended cruising, with paravane stabilization, a bow thruster, lithium house batteries, substantial solar capacity, diesel heat, a watermaker, an auxiliary get-home system, and a well-equipped tender.

The Widebody arrangement carries the salon out to the port side of the hull, eliminating the port-side deck in exchange for a noticeably larger living space. The result is a salon that feels unusually open for a 42-foot boat, with movable reclining chairs to port, built-in L-shape seating to starboard, large aft windows, and double doors opening onto the enclosed aft deck. A Dickinson Antarctic diesel stove adds both warmth and character, particularly for cruising in the Pacific Northwest.

The galley is located forward in the salon and includes a Force 10 four-burner propane stove and oven, Vitrifrigo AC/DC refrigerator and freezer, microwave, and a large custom stainless-steel sink. The arrangement provides good working space without separating the galley from the main living area.

Forward, the master stateroom has an offset double berth, along with a huge hanging locker and plenty of drawer storage. The ensuite head is located in the bow and includes a separate shower and a Thetford freshwater macerating toilet. The second stateroom has been opened up to create a more flexible space while retaining upper and lower berths and a large locker. A second head with a separate stall shower is located in the companionway.

The pilothouse has a centerline helm, pedestal seat, port-side chart table, doors to both side decks, and a raised settee that can also serve as an additional double berth. Navigation equipment includes Furuno radar and a depth sounder, Garmin chartplotting, Simrad AP60 autopilot with FU80 follow-up steering, a Simrad satellite compass, Vesper AIS, and a NMEA 2000 network with an Actisense interface. Three iPads are currently used as additional navigation displays running TZ iBoat and iSailor and will be reformatted to stay with the boat.

Pacific Drifter is powered by a naturally aspirated Ford Lehman "Super 135" diesel with approximately 8,400 hours. Power is transmitted through a Borg Warner reduction gear and an Aquadrive CV-joint shaft system with a separate thrust bearing. The Ford Lehman is a familiar and widely supported engine that remains perfectly suited to the Krogen 42’s efficient, full-displacement hull and long-term operation.

A particularly useful feature on this vessel is the Yanmar 3GM30 auxiliary engine. In addition to driving a 210-amp Balmar alternator, the Yanmar serves as a chain-driven get-home propulsion system, providing a level of redundancy rarely found aboard boats in this size range. A Lewmar bow thruster assists with close-quarters handling, while the paravane stabilizer system provides a simple, proven, and analog means of reducing roll.

The electrical system has been substantially modernized. The house bank consists of four 100-amp-hour lithium iron-phosphate batteries supported by a Victron MultiPlus 3000 inverter/charger and Victron Cerbo GX monitoring system with a GX Touch 50 display. Two 370-watt Grape Solar panels provide 740 watts of solar capacity through a Victron MPPT controller. Both the main engine and auxiliary engine are fitted with high-output Balmar alternators, giving Pacific Drifter several independent charging sources.

Additional cruising equipment includes a Spectra Newport 400 watermaker, Webasto diesel-fired hydronic heating system, 700 gallons of fuel capacity, 360 gallons of freshwater, and a Rocna Vulcan 33-kilogram primary anchor with 300 feet of 3/8-inch chain.

The aft deck is fully enclosed with canvas and Strataglass, creating a protected outdoor living area for cruising in a wide range of weather. Above, the flying bridge has a centerline helm with bench seating and storage to both port and starboard. The aluminum radar mast and boom support the paravane outriggers and also provide a practical working platform for the boat’s cruising equipment.

The included tender is a 2018 AB 10 AL aluminum-bottom RIB with a helm seat and a 20-hp fuel-injected Tohatsu outboard.

Pacific Drifter is a well-equipped Krogen 42 with meaningful systems, substantial tankage, redundant propulsion and charging capability, and the interior volume of the widebody/asymmetrical arrangement. For an owner looking for an efficient and comfortable platform for extended coastal or offshore cruising, Pacific Drifter offers a considerable amount of capability in a proven 42-foot package.
