PRELUDE is one of 7 cold moulded mahogany examples of the successful Compass 47 series, designed by Angelo Lavranos.Built in South Africa, in Constantia/Cape Town, she has a mahogany cold molded hull and teak interior and deck. Very comfortable for cruising, she has up to 10 berths between the 3 cabins and the saloon! An uncommon solution in boats of that period and of this size. A very high-performance boat, winner among other races of a Panerai Trophy, she is perfectly maintained - every year she is hauled and checked - and the fully accessible engine compartment allows for convenient checks and maintenance. In perfect working order and extremely robust, PRELUDE is ready to set sail for any destination. And, why not, re-enter the vintage regatta circuit as a Classic IOR. She is currently based in Sanremo.
Angelo Lavranos was one of the pioneers of light displacement racing yachts and designer of many successful boats. He worked with Angus Primrose in England, then Sparkman & Stephens in New York, before establishing the base of his design studio in Capetown in 1975. Lavranos' design studio then moved to New Zealand in 1996. At S&S he was a project manager for the Swan 40 and 48. In South Africa he designed over 60 different boats from dinghies to catamarans to superyachts. Among his most successful projects is the Compass 47. In the late 70s and early 80s, 57 top-quality examples of this successful design were built, 50 constructed in fiberglass and 7 in cold molded mahogany. Many of these excellent yachts were purchased in Europe and North and South America and almost all of them sailed to their destination and crossed at least one ocean, some two or three, and at least three circumnavigated the world. One of them won the South Atlantic Race in '82 and the Beachcomber Race in '85, showing its speed and stability.
