DESCRIPTION

There are daysailers that are essentially small cruising boats with abbreviated interiors, and there are those unabashedly conceived from the beginning around the simple pleasure of sailing. The Eagle 36 belongs firmly in the latter camp.

Built in the Netherlands by Leonardo Yachts, JOAN CATHERINE combines the long ends, low freeboard and varnished trim of a classic with a modern composite hull, carbon rig, efficient appendages and sail handling brought directly to the helmsman. At just under 36 feet and only 8' 6" in beam, she has unusually graceful proportions, with nearly twelve feet of combined overhang giving her the look of a much older yacht.

A good daysailer should remove reasons not to go sailing. On JOAN CATHERINE, the carbon mast, roller-furling headsail, electric winches and helm-centered controls make it entirely practical for one person to get underway and sail the boat without a crew or much preparation.

Most of the Eagle 36 is devoted to an exceptionally long cockpit. Naval architect Robert Perry put it well in his review of the design: “The real ‘accommodations’ on a design like this are in the cockpit. That's where you will live on this boat.” There is room for family and friends, a picnic and an unhurried afternoon, with long teak seats, a large, varnished wheel and a teak table forming the focal point of the boat.

It is easy to imagine leaving the harbor after work, unrolling the jib once clear of the moorings, sailing across the bay while there is still warmth in the sun, and eating supper in the cockpit before heading home. Or taking her out alone simply because the breeze is too good to waste.

The boat has earned praise beyond her looks. After sailing the Eagle 36 in Holland, Classic Boat described the Eagle designs as showing “an astonishing attention to detail and above all, elegance,” and called them “gorgeous to look at and exceedingly pleasing to sail.”

Below, the accommodations are intentionally modest: a compact, beautifully finished cabin with a large V-berth, seating and stowage, teak sole and enclosed marine head. Two can comfortably spend a night aboard, but the interior has never been allowed to compromise the narrow beam, low profile and long cockpit that define the boat.

JOAN CATHERINE is also an unusual opportunity in the United States. Leonardo Yachts is a small Dutch builder whose Eagle line has earned an international following, yet these boats remain uncommon in American harbors. The Eagle 36 later evolved into the current Eagle 38, making JOAN CATHERINE an early example of what has become a distinctive family of Spirit of Tradition yachts.

Built in 2015 and formerly named MISS IZZY, JOAN CATHERINE was described in a 2022 pre-purchase survey as being in above-average overall condition. Since then, her current owners have continued to improve and maintain her to a notably high standard.

In 2025 she was repowered with a new Volvo Penta D1-13 diesel, now showing approximately 25 hours, and received a new North Sails 3Di mainsail and jib. Raymarine electronics have been renewed, Harken two-speed electric winches fitted, and the teak decks were refurbished in 2026. She has been kept indoors in heated storage during the winter, with the carbon mast removed, inspected and serviced annually.

In short, the Eagle 36 is a particularly pure answer to a simple question: how do you make a few hours under sail as beautiful, comfortable and uncomplicated as possible? JOAN CATHERINE is as fine an example of the type as can be found.

HULL, DECK AND COCKPIT

Foam-cored fiberglass composite hull with molded fiberglass structural grid. Foam-cored fiberglass deck and superstructure with teak overlay. Lead keel with stainless-steel keel fastenings. Compact main cabin finished with bright joinery and teak cabin sole. Large V-berth with overnight accommodations for two. Interior seating and stowage. Enclosed Jabsco manual marine head with approximately 11-gallon holding tank. Approximately 11-gallon freshwater tank with pressure-water system serving a cockpit shower.
