2001 Catalina 470 — “Another October”

The Catalina 470 packs genuine liveaboard volume into an easily handled 47-footer, and this wing-keel example is a well-kept case in point. Another October is currently on the hard at Larsen’s in Waukegan, Illinois, on Lake Michigan’s western shore, so her hull and underbody are open for unhurried inspection. She was cleaned inside and out this season in preparation for sale.

SAIL HANDLING

In-mast furling mainsail and roller furling genoa put the entire sail plan under cockpit control. A rigid boom vang and a large adjustable mainsheet traveler allow proper mainsail shaping, and all control lines lead aft to stoppers and winches. Deck hardware is Harken: self-tailing primaries, a self-tailing cabintop winch to port, and an electric halyard/mainsheet winch on the starboard cabintop.

DECK & COCKPIT

A hard dodger plus bimini and connector canvas give the center cockpit real all-weather shelter. Twin independent manual steering stations, cockpit table, cockpit cushions and a cockpit shower round out the space topsides. Forward, large offset anchor rollers carry the ground tackle, with anchor, chain and rode, an electric windlass operated up and down by foot switch, and a bow thruster for close-quarters handling. Aft, a radar arch carries the radar and supports dinghy davits, with a separate crane for the dinghy outboard. A solar panel with upgraded controller keeps the batteries topped up.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The center-cockpit layout yields a spacious owner’s stateroom aft with a centerline queen berth, vanity table, bedside tables and lights, a large hanging closet, generous storage, and direct access to its own head with shower. Forward, a Pullman berth cabin has its own closets and storage plus direct access to a second head with shower. Between them sits a large salon with convertible dinette and a sleeping-length cabin berth to starboard that converts into two facing seats and a table. Beautiful varnished teak joinery throughout, cream Ultraleather upholstery, and huge hanging lockers and storage.

GALLEY

Three-burner stainless gimballed LPG stove with oven, microwave, front- and top-loading refrigerator/freezer, a top-loading dry storage locker that doubles as an ice chest, a pantry, and ample lockers and drawers including a glass cabinet and organizers.

MECHANICAL & ELECTRICAL

75 HP Yanmar 4JH4-TE turbocharged diesel, fresh water cooled. Fischer Panda 8 kW generator. Three 30-amp shore power inlets feeding 115 VAC and 12 VDC distribution panels with a separate main breaker panel.

ELECTRONICS & NAVIGATION

Raymarine chartplotter; Raymarine ST60 speed, depth and wind transducers and displays; ST60 multi display; Raymarine ST8002 autopilot. Icom VHF with RAM mic. Two LCD televisions on brackets and a stereo. The electronics are the original-era ST60 suite — functional, but dated.
