History of "CARIBE"
Built in 1958 by the Albury family on Man-O-War Cay, Bahamas, this 28' Flybridge carries a lineage that goes back to 1920. Maurice Albury began building boats by hand for local sponge harvesters with no plans, just a keen eye developed from decades of experience passed down through a family of shipbuilders; descendants of a sailor shipwrecked on the island in 1820. In 1952, Maurice's son Willard Albury formalized the family trade as Albury Brothers Boats. With the help and expertise of his dad and brothers, this boat was built years before they were formally recognized as boat builders. Originally named "SEA BELL," she was built for Man-O-War homeowner Gilbert Bell. Her design reflects the dual purpose Bahamian builders were famous for; part Bahamian lobster and fishing boat, part New England-style lobster boat pilothouse, built to run smooth and dry in the short chop of the Abacos.
The boat changed hands and names more than once over the decades, later renamed "DOWNWIND" by an owner who ran her as an inter-island ferry between Man-O-War and Marco Harbour. A Florida couple then took on a multi-year restoration in 2015, and she eventually found her way into the hands of her current owner in North Carolina, who renamed her "CARIBE". In 2025, the boat completed a full, year-long overhaul which included new framing, planking below the waterline, glass sheathing on the bottom, a fully reconditioned 240-hp Yanmar diesel, and all-new wiring and electronics. She was then relaunched in July 2025 on the Northeast Cape Fear River. To our knowledge, "CARIBE" is the last surviving of the 3 ever built, making this a rare opportunity to own a piece of Albury Brothers lineage.
