What makes ILEX special? First off, she is a one owner boat.Sometimes this is overrated, but in the case of ILEX, she has benefitted from an owner who really takes care of his boat. She is in great condition and the owners have spared no expense keeping her looking great. The 42 MKII feels like a much larger boat than it is, yet it is easy to run and maintain. She is the perfect platform for coastal cruising. Easy to sail, moderate draft and a spacious cockpit. If you are looking in this size range, you owe it to yourself to read on and look through the images of the boat.
Catalina is known for having bright interiors with lots of light and fresh air coming in. Their interiors are well known for rich wood feel and warmth. The 3 cabins layout offers the ability to have multiple guests with valued privacy. Having two heads on a 42 foot boat is a treat, and the 42 does it well, so that there is even a stall shower in the primary cabin.
Accommodations:
ILEX features a primary cabin forward. This allows for a very nice head forward of the sleeping area. And a large berth to port. There is plenty of storage on shelfs, drawers and hanging locker to bring clothes for every occasion. There are two large guest cabins aft.
Highlights:
Primary cabin:
Pullman model owner forward layout. The large berth is on the port side and is very comfortable with shelfing outboard. The cabin features a very large hanging locker aft and a five-drawer dresser forward of a dressing seat with storage under that. The cabin has an en-suite head with separate stall shower. The head features a large vanity sink with single handle mixer. Opposite is the head with a shelf above.
Guest cabins:
Saloon/dinning:
Port side wrap-around seating with a large table, and center bench seating. The saloon table can go down to form another berth when desired. Nav desk/seating at aft end of saloon seating allows dual purpose of the seating. The Nav station has a large table for viewing charts or working on a laptop. The electrical panel is located at the back of the table and the VHF and stereo are above this. The air-conditioning control is also located here. There is a TV unit on the aft bulkhead of the nav station.
Galley:
The galley is to starboard, and it is very well laid out. The dual sinks are forward at an angle, thus allowing for counter space on either side. Aft of the sink is the stove/oven. It has a removable Corian cover that allows for extra counter space when not cooking, but also partially hides the unit when not in use. Next aft is refrigeration/freezer with a SS door. Overall, the gally has loads of counter space and excellent storage of dry goods and cooking equipment.
Hull:
Catalina has been producing sold construction hulls to ensure that the hulls do not have core issues later in life. This is very robust and easy to care for.
Deck gear:
Catalina has a consistent theme to their deck layout and equipment. They design in comfortable seating with proper sized back rests. The coamings are wide enough for sitting on or standing on, making movement around the boat easy. They design in wide and flat decks for easy movement and sure footing. There are lockers in the cockpit for equipment storage. The single steering wheel is large and comfortable to steer with. The engine control panel mounted on the steering pedestal, allowing easy monitoring of the engine. Above that is a compass and chart plotter. Both nicely positioned for ease of use.
The dodger is very well maintained with covers for the windows when not in use. The dodger can connect with the bimini to extend protection from the sun, and rain, all the way aft. This is a great feature that adds so much to the enjoyment of the boat.
Rig and sails:
The mast is very simple, with just two sets of spreaders. The mainsail is handled by a Dutchman flaking system, which allows for easy storage of the mainsail when lowered. Combined with the headsail furler, the decision to go sailing is not very hard. It is easy to deploy both sails in short order and to stow them way effortlessly when you have returned to port.
