Imagine is a well-kept example of the legendary J/44 — a performance-oriented offshore cruiser with a race-winning pedigree and bluewater capability. Designed by Rod Johnstone and built by TPI in Rhode Island, this yacht combines excellent sailing characteristics with a comfortable three-cabin cruising layout. Imagine has been steadily upgraded under current ownership, with a strong emphasis on reliability, safety, and performance.
With a modern electronics suite, extensive mechanical upgrades, and a clean, functional interior, this J/44 is turn-key for offshore adventures or fast coastal cruising.

As evidenced by the bronze plaque on the forward salon bulkhead, Imagine was built to American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) ✠A1 Offshore Yacht Service Classification. Deciphering this, the Maltese Cross means the yacht and her machinery have been built and tested under ABS survey for unrestricted ocean service. The A1 covers the hull and equipment under the rules for vessels in commercial yacht service, which generally means charter use. The surveys begin at the planning stage, so the original drawings and plans for building the vessel are the first thing that must be approved.
The J/44 was designed to be dual-purpose: a fast offshore racer that could also be comfortably cruised.
IRC & PHRF-friendly design—the boat has done well in offshore events like the Bermuda Race, SORC, and transatlantic races.
PHRF Rating: Varies by region and sail inventory, but typically around -12 to 12, depending on setup.
Sail Area: ~1,050 sq ft (main and 100% foretriangle), with powerful spinnakers available for racing.
Over the past decade, Imagine has benefited from a thoughtful and well-documented upgrade path, with major systems and components serviced or replaced by respected marine professionals in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. Some highlights include:
