SASSAFRASS was built in Vietnam in the early 1960’s for a US naval officer and spent many subsequent years in southern California’s Emerald Bay. Her current owners purchased her in 2006, and with oversight by Naval Architect Tad Roberts, undertook a complete 10-year professional restoration. Since her completion in 2016 she has been busy cruising and voyaging in the Pacific.
During her rebuild the interior of SASSEFRASS was completely removed and new ceiling planks were prepared and installed nearly full length from the stem to the aft edge of the main companionway hatch. All bulkhead and interior partial bulkheads, and cabinetry were removed and re-installed according to a new interior design by Tad Roberts.
The deck, house, and cockpit were all replaced, and all electrical and mechanical systems were designed and installed anew to ABYC standards.
SASSAFRASS is a strong, remarkable, and extremely well-built vessel, a rare find in her quality of materials and construction. Currently in far above average condition, with a dry bilge and generally very clean.
Hull Materials: The hull is built entirely of "Sao wood" a Vietnamese hardwood, an extremely strong, dense, and rot-resistant hardwood. Hull as taken back to bare wood and completely refinished in 2018. Below the waterline is caulked, topsides were splined in 2018 using Vic Frank method. Ballast keel is cast iron; sandblasted, epoxy coated and faired in 2021.

Rudder design was a group effort by Tad, Pete Langley of PT foundry and Simon Miles, local composite company. All stock interfaces are G Flex and the entire rudder was vacuum bagged with infused layup. New bronze rudder stuffing box and quadrant by PT foundry.
Cockpit: Rebuilt in 2016, 2 layers of 1/2" hydro tech ply with 10oz fiberglass/epoxy. Original teak sole was re-finished and epoxied over with TDS seams.
