Sea to Sea: Caterpillar Diesels with 985 Hours and a Refreshed Interior
Sea to Sea is a 2003 Silverton 38 Convertible with the power package buyers look for in this model: twin Caterpillar 3126 diesels, 385 HP each, with just 985 hours. Silverton designed the 38 as a family cruiser with a cockpit big enough to fish from, and she remains one of the most livable convertibles in her size range, with two private staterooms, a galley that rivals much larger boats and a bright, open salon.
Her interior goes well beyond the factory finish. Teak and holly flooring now runs throughout, with updated upholstery, fresh wall coverings and LED lighting, and the galley has an upgraded backsplash and appliances. The salon is wrapped in windows and has an electric sofa that converts to a full size bed. Forward, the master has an island queen berth, the port guest cabin sleeps two, and a split head with a VacuFlush toilet and separate stall shower serves both. Two Cruisair 16,000 BTU reverse cycle units keep everyone comfortable from spring through fall.
On the flybridge, a fiberglass hardtop and full canvas enclosure stretch the season, and the centerline helm carries Furuno radar, a Northstar chartplotter and a Simrad autopilot. A bow thruster makes docking simple, an 8 kW Kohler diesel generator runs the air conditioning away from the dock, and the house, generator and engine batteries were all replaced in 2023. She is lying in Essex, Connecticut, an easy run down the Connecticut River to Long Island Sound.

The interior pairs Silverton's solid cherry cabinetry with a thorough refresh. Teak and holly flooring runs through the salon, galley and both staterooms, and updated upholstery, new wall coverings and LED lighting give her a clean, current look. Large windows, overhead hatches and hull portlights keep the boat bright, and two Cruisair reverse cycle units provide heat and air conditioning throughout.
Step in from the cockpit through the sliding glass door and the salon opens up around you, with windows on three sides. An electric sofa to starboard converts to a full size bed, and an L shaped settee with a custom engraved table sits to port, with the Bose components and main electrical panel in a cabinet nearby. A few steps down and forward, the galley runs along the starboard side. The guest cabin is to port, partly tucked beneath the salon sole, and the master stateroom fills the bow with an island queen berth. Between them is the split head, with the toilet and vanity compartment to starboard and a separate stall shower to port.
Interior Styling and Additional Features:
MAIN SALON
The salon is bright and open, with nearly continuous windows, opening side panels for cross ventilation and a sliding glass door with screen to the cockpit. The electric sofa to starboard folds out into a full size bed for extra guests, and the L shaped settee and custom engraved table to port make a comfortable spot for meals.
MASTER STATEROOM (FORWARD)
The master stateroom is in the bow, with an island queen berth set high enough to take a standard queen mattress and a step on each side for easy access. An overhead hatch and hull portlights bring in natural light, and multiple storage lockers keep clothes and gear put away. The toilet compartment and stall shower of the split head are both reached directly from the cabin.
Split Head
One split head serves both staterooms. The toilet and vanity compartment is to starboard and opens to both the master and the companionway, so it also works as the day head. The stall shower sits opposite to port and is shared by the master and the guest cabin.
GUEST CABIN (PORT)
The guest cabin is to port, partly tucked beneath the salon sole, and it is roomier than most on a boat this size, with full headroom in its forward half. The berth is set up as a queen and can also be arranged as twin singles with a filler cushion. Guests share the stall shower with the master.
The galley is a few steps down from the salon and runs along the starboard side, borrowing space from the companionway to give it far more counter and storage room than you would expect on a 38. Corian counters, a deep stainless sink, an upgraded backsplash and upgraded appliances make it easy to cook for a crowd or live aboard for a season.
ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS
Navigation electronics and a full set of engine gauges are mounted at the centerline helm on the flybridge, with radar, chartplotter, autopilot, VHF and depth sounder all within reach of the wheel.
HULL
Silverton laid up the 38 Convertible by hand, using stitched and woven reinforcements in polyester resin with a vinylester skin coat below the waterline to resist blistering. The bottom is solid fiberglass and the hull sides are cored with CoreMat. The modified V planing hull has a relatively fine entry, 17° of deadrise at the transom, hard lifting chines and a flared bow, which add up to a dry, comfortable ride offshore.
DECK
The deck and superstructure are balsa cored fiberglass with wide, clean nonskid walking surfaces. The hull to deck joint is bonded and mechanically fastened, and a PVC rub rail with a stainless steel insert protects the sheer.
COCKPIT
FLYBRIDGE
ENGINE AND MECHANICAL
Twin Caterpillar 3126 turbo diesels, 385 HP each, drive four blade bronze propellers through ZF Marine transmissions, and 985 hours is low for a boat of her age. The engine room is roomy, with access through hatches in the salon sole and from the cockpit, and the engines sit on steel foundation beams.
PLUMBING AND TANKAGE
Fuel is carried in two 180 gallon aluminum tanks with fills on both sides of the boat. The fresh water and holding tanks are polyethylene.

BROKER’S COMMENTS
Diesel powered 38 Convertibles with fewer than 1,000 hours are not easy to find, and Sea to Sea backs up her Caterpillars with an interior that has been refreshed well beyond the factory finish. With two private staterooms, a full galley, reverse cycle air and a hardtop flybridge with full canvas, she is set up equally well for weekends, longer New England cruises or a season living aboard.
