Shenanigans Boat | 52' Amel 1994

As one first approaches this yacht from a far your first impression is how sleek her hull and deck are “from all angles”. You will find a fine entry providing her with a smooth ride and clean side profile with a swept-up transom that narrows enough to make her elegant but not so much to take away from the practicality. You don’t realize at first glance that she is a center cockpit. My first approach to this yacht was by dingy, and access was done with ease. The transom does not have nor need a large sugar scoop transom, it rather has two nice sized, molded in steps not detracting from her looks yet providing good egress to her from a dingy or floating dock. With multiple handholds, stern rail and arch one is never without something to hold on to.

Once on deck you will notice that walk areas such as the aft , side and foredecks are all wide and clear of clutter making moving about safer when under way. On the aft deck is a large lazaretto, an arch providing mounting for solar panels, wind generator and hoist for the dingy. As you go forward, you’ll notice that stations are all interconnected with a sold stainless steel rail with a standard second lower wire lifeline. This all connects to the stern and bow pulpit providing and extra level of security. At the boat are two more large lazarettes with the windlass mounted between.

Before stepping into the cockpit you will see a low solid windshield providing good protection and visibility. Attached to the upper edge is a removable canvas upper and side panels adding to the cockpit protection. As you step into the cockpit you will notice that you do not climb up rather step across into the cockpit. The cockpit is quite large and deep providing great comfort and protection when under way. Next you will see that lack of a pedestal due to the layout places the helm on the forward bulkhead of the cockpit. In doing so it places the helmsman in the most protected area as well as provides room for the array of sail controls, electronics and engine controls as well as providing a real helms seat. Full engine access is provided through a large central hatch in the cockpit sole. This compartment is sealed from the rest of the boat making it a water tight compartment.

Before stepping below is another unique feature, the drop-down companionway door. There is nothing to store it just disappears below. As you descend below you will be greeted by a large main salon / galley / nav station area. This space is both bright but warm feeling due to the extensive use of wood and tasteful fabrics.

Directly to port is a large U-shaped galley. Being set off to the side of the companionway places anyone working there out of the passageway of other guests. This galley has a large amount of open working space for food prep which is often lacking. For cooking chores there is a stainless steel 3 burner stove with oven with a custom burner top cover. Above the stove for those quick warmups there is a built in microwave and for clean up is a large double bowl sink with a molded in drain board. There is an abundant amount of convenient storage both above and below the counter and for cold storage the front load refrigerator is located below the counter with a very large top load freezer. The countertop has been custom made of a green marble look finish and custom teak trim rail to match the wood used throughout the yacht.

On the outboard starboard side is a large nav station. The nav station contains a lift top chart table with several draws below and above is more storage and electronics.

Moving forward is the salon, to port is a very large U-shaped dinette with a beautifully finished dining table large enough to comfortably seat 6 adults. Behind and above the outboard side of the seating is more storage concealed with both doors and drawers. On the side is a long straight settee with a low cabinet at either end. Above is more doored storage with a large flat screen TV viewable from both the dinette and galley.

Next moving forward and passing through a watertight bulkhead and door creating a watertight compartment forward. To the port side is the guest head. This area has a very large, molded sink with built-in towel rack, outboard are several open storage compartments and the marine toilet. The sole is a large teak grate providing good drainage and a shower curtain that encircles the head area keeping the storage areas dry.

Guest cabin is the last stop forward. This cabin has two single berths one on port and one starboard, both with storage above. On the port bulkhead is a small fold down writing table.

Back in the salon and moving aft you pass through a passageway leading to the aft cabin. In this passageway on the outboard side is a large single or pilot berth with storage above and a drop in leeboard for use when under way. On the inboard side of the passageway is stored a very large cockpit table. Continuing aft on the starboard side is a large hanging locker and to port is the owner’s head. This compartment is very similar to the forward head with the exception being slightly larger.

The owners stateroom is very bright with plenty of headroom and walking space. The main focal point of this cabin is the large pulman berth combined with a wrap around settee at the foot end of the berth and padded bolster that wraps completely around both the berth and the seating. Again, for sleeping underway there are drop in leeboards. On the starboard side is a dressing table/ writing desk with a swing out stool.

Throughout this finely crafted yacht you will find the high grade of quality workmanship and materials that Amel is known for. Some of which include the beautiful African Mahogany interior for all furnishings paired with a traditional teak and holly sole, 4 water-tight compartments, engine compartment that is sealed off from the rest of the yacht and the ease of sail handling through the use of electric fullers and winches.

I've been told that there is no such thing as a perfect boat ….. but this comes close to it and she is ready to go south this winter if you are.
