Hinckley Yachts
In 1928, Benjamin B. Hinckley established Hinckley Yachts in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Henry Hinckley, Benjamin’s son, took over the company in 1932. By 1980, Henry’s son, Bob Hinckley, was running the company along with his business partner, Sheap McKenney.
During the 1940s, Hinckley built close to 500 motor vessels for the United States government to use in World War II. In the late 1980s, Hinckley made a drastic shift from sail to power, launching the Talaria 39, an iconic Downeast-style motorboat. On the mission for a lighter vessel with a smooth ride, Hinckley was the first American yacht builder to convert from fiberglass to Kevlar in 1991.

Hinckley Yachts FAQs
What is Hinckley Yachts known for?
Hinckley is known for building premium American yachts that blend traditional craftsmanship with advanced technology. The brand is particularly famous for its iconic Picnic Boat series, elegant Downeast styling, and innovative engineering solutions such as JetStick® joystick controls. Hinckley yachts are admired for their quality, performance, and timeless aesthetics.
Why is the Hinckley Picnic Boat so famous?
Introduced in 1994, the Hinckley Picnic Boat helped create the modern luxury dayboat category. Its combination of classic Maine-inspired styling, shallow draft, waterjet propulsion, and easy operation made it a favorite among experienced boaters and newcomers alike. The model's success inspired countless imitators but remains one of the most influential boat designs of the past several decades.
What is Hinckley's JetStick® technology?
JetStick® is Hinckley's proprietary yacht control system that allows operators to maneuver the yacht using a joystick rather than traditional throttles and steering controls. The latest JetStick 4® includes features such as DockHold™, Heading Hold®, GPS-assisted positioning, and automatic mode selection, helping simplify docking and close-quarters maneuvering.
What makes Hinckley different from other yacht builders?
Hinckley has long distinguished itself through its combination of craftsmanship, innovation, and owner experience. The company was an early adopter of fiberglass yacht construction, continues to utilize advanced carbon composite technology, and operates an extensive East Coast service network to support owners throughout the life of their yacht. This commitment to innovation and service has helped build an exceptionally loyal owner community.
