5 Reasons to Cruise to Costa Rica

Golfito Marina Village & Resort, working in affiliation with Denison Super Yacht Division and the Hacienda El Dorado development group, is planning to break ground in June on a deep-water marina in Costa Rica with slips for yachts up to 350 feet LOA. It is expected to breathe new economic life into the town of Golfito, which was a home to Chiquita Banana until 1985.

Here are the five things that most excite us about this project:

•    It’s not going to be just a new marina. The developers are working with local officials to renovate the town’s main boulevard (connecting it with Golfito Airport), a central plaza, a Golfito history museum, a tourist information center, local artists’ crafts and arts boutiques, a new boardwalk with restaurants and other boater-friendly services such as water taxis and bicycle rentals.

•    The first phase of development will include 50 of the future 130 boat slips along with some of the planned beach villas, floating islands with villas, deluxe hotel rooms and accommodations for yacht crew.

•    The resort will include an open-air spa, fitness facilities, swimming pools and a restaurant with a night club.

•    Not only will the marina have 265 feet of fuel dock along with a dry dock and a service yard, but it also will have lots of amenities for anglers — with plans to host sportfishing tournaments.

•    Golfito Bay, on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, has a calm harbor and should make for an interesting charter destination, what with Costa Rica’s existing infrastructure for eco-travel on land already in place.
